People who say things like that are just jealous at the fact that they aren't good at anything except complaining. I have a youtube as well (though I have 0 popularity and make no money) and I watch popular youtubers videos, and the majority of people these days who complain are those who complain about youtubers who make money (doesn't matter what it's for, they'll use it all as a complaint), and honestly, it's just a load of hot air. If you do something to make money, that's money that you can use to survive in this crappy economy and it's likely more than those complainers are making.

My advice: Stay strong, try not to let people like that bother you, and block those who are offensive to you (they can still watch your vids, but can't comment or message you when blocked).

Thank you to everyone who has replied - I really appreciate it. I don't know what else to say, other than thank you! hehe.

I did reply to the negative message, but have not yet received a reply. I would normally ignore it, but I replied, calmly :) just to set the record straight that I don't make enough to cover the sites I put up to help people, let alone anything more.

You were a LOT more polite than I would have been in the situation - my responses would have included "F*** YOU", "Who the f*** do you think you are to make such assumptions about me?" and "F*** RIGHT OFF".

If there is one thing I dislike it is when people take a tiny bit of information and then make wild, flawed assumptions based on - largely - their BS prejudices or maybe in this case jealousy?

hehe, not sure about that - plus, I've reacted badly to negative comments in the past, years ago when I was sort of 'new' to YouTube, and it's not the right thing to do, because these people are prepared to argue FOREVER!

And anyway, there were only like 2 or 3 people that wanted a soft toy mascot :P hardly flying off the shelves so to speak XD

If it's helping other people, it's something you're enjoying, then you're turning something society usually denotes as negative into something positive.

See, the real problem is probably jealousy: someone isn't able to find a way to benefit from their own problems, and so when they find someone that does, they give them trouble for it.

It sounds to me like you're simply trying to reach out and help other people with the ideas that you have come across by living with a disability. There are many of us that want to do so. I want to do so, and I'm planning to do so.

So what if you benefit from what you're doing? It's OK to benefit. It's sad when you won't let yourself enjoy the "fruits of your labor" (or so they call it).

By the way, I was indirectly told once that applying for accommodations was (in essence) milking my disability in order to get ahead and get advantages that others didn't have.

Yeah, because getting help for a (dis) ability makes you more able than those WITH the ability that you don't have.

Don't let it get you down. There will always be people there to naysay you and push you aside. Only you know your motives, so go for it.

By the way, thanks for what you do. :D

Back to my original question... If you don't have a disability, selling a product that people want but doesn't help them is perfectly ok. If you have a disability you must sell products that help people, the fact that people want the product is not enough. Doesn't that seem very bigoted to you guys, to hold disabled people to a different standard than others? Why are you required to help people as a condition of commerce just because you have a disability?

Willow ask that unsubscriber why it is holding you to a different standard.

Yes, this is a double standard.

You're all making such good points. The double standards thing is so true :(

It's all coming down to the soft toys - which is so stupid, because they're just a small part of what I do - and they're not even finished yet for sale!

I mostly concentrate on the YouTube videos, making one a week with my partner, which is a fun, light hearted one and making a mid week one of some kind - either just a regular vlog, or an extras/bloopers video if I feel unwell - and then about once a month trying to do a useful, serious AS one. Then I concentrate on my book, both the one I am currently writing and the one I have released (there is a certain amount of emailing to be done to respond to interviews etc). After that I make sure to update my Facebook page daily - which is linked with twitter. I also make sure to send out a newsletter around them middle of every month to the people who signed up from my website. I also submit something monthly (poetry, videos etc) to a fellow Aspie who runs a very good site called 'AbilitySOTA'. And then, I post on my forum/moderate etc, which we just launched - but still make sure to post on the other AS forums I am a member of. As you can imagine, that does take up a lot of time and there's no money in any of it as yet, except from the book sales and the odd pence from YouTube.

The soft toys - I cannot show you :P Because there's only one finished and no one has seen it yet! But I can show you the graphic art version of them which I made :D

Indeed, jealousy is heavily involved here.

Some people just feel miserable for various reasons and the sight of happy people irritates them. And seeing a person with some impairment being happy is too much for them, so the natural reaction is to accuse them of not having a "real" disability, because, you know, disabled people should be extremely depressed and never smile in their entire life.

Or they might just feel envy that one could receive money for having a "defect", whereas the glorious normal people have to work to earn their money.

You could try changing the wording on your site so It doesn't look as if your trying to capitalize, people tend to get offended if it looks like your site is an advertisement. Maybe get rid of the "Buy, Buy, Buy!" theme throughout the article and just put it all down at the bottom as a footnote.

Quote:
Willow is a young woman with Aspergers Syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder, Dyspraxia and Dyscalculia. She runs her YouTube channel and Facebook page which will fit alongside her main blogging website which she is currently developing.

Since 2009, she has gained an online following thanks to her video blog about her life with Aspergers. On the whole her videos are well received and she continues to post regularly, after taking a year out to spend time with her partner. They now upload videos together weekly, alongside her regular blog and her serious videos in which she speaks only about Aspergers.

Her main interest is Photography, and you will see many styles from abstract to landscape - most of which will be available via her store to purchase as either a poster or canvas. She also spends a lot of time painting and making crafty things. Her paintings will be in the online store as well, and you will be able to commission paintings too.

She recently released a book of her poems and short stories which she hopes will be able to help other young people and adults with Asperger's Syndrome or similar conditions. You can buy it here or here.

She is currently putting a second book together explaining the struggles she has had and how she has overcome various difficulties but also how she copes in adult life.

Email her at me@willowhope.com if you are interested in commissioning a painting/purchasing a print. You can also ask Willow to speak in a video for documentaries/training purposes, as she has done in the past for various projects.

Best of luck to you!

I think people would also turn that around the other way, saying "oh you make it look like you're not trying to earn money but look at (yadda yadda example here)".

Plain and simple OP, you can't please everyone, nor should you try to. Do what makes you happy and if it earns you money, then fantastic, we should all be so lucky.
There's a saying that many have said and it applies to everything; "haters gonna hate", so don't worry about what others say about how you make money or what you choose to do.
