I'm not ashamed of my ignorance... WTF is a derpy?

Derpy Hooves is a nickname given to a background pegasus character from the animated TV series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. The moniker comes from a stillshot in the pilot episode, wherein the character is seen wearing a googly-eyed expression similar to the DERP face.

Heck, it would be offensive to remove a character because they were special.

I hadn't heard of the controversy before.

My son's take:

"It's not fair! Derpy was different but still had friends. Derpy taught people it is OK to be friends with someone who is different. It's like they are saying it is not OK to be friends with someone who is different, or that it's not OK to be different."

He then proceeded to cry, as did his little sister. If it matters, he is aware that he is "different" but she is not.

awww your son touched me with those beautiful words. =') And he is completely right. Especially since Derpy could have done a lot to change even adults perception and views on the disabled and help eliminate the common stereotypes and misconceptions related to people with disabilities.

My daughter would like to write a letter to the creators of MLP. She has already made a "Save Derpy" sign that she wants to send them. She cried for a long time last night. So much so that I wish I wouldn't have told her.

Does anyone know if there happens to be any petitions floating around about this? I am going to help her write the letter and everything and want to take this opportunity to teach her about standing up for what she believes.

My son added a new comment today that I love "I have a lazy eye and I am clumsy. I do not find Derpy offensive, so why should people who do not have a lazy eye get to say that it's offensive? I find that offensive!"

:D
That is a great Idea! I think I will write my own letter also. I have not seen and petitions lately but I will defiantly continue to look for one and I will post the link when I can find one .
I wish we could do this poll/ a petition on a larger scale and also send it the MLP creators and Hasbro .
