After many years of smoking, I have been smoke-free for 10 months. As a previous post said, ever since I started using an e-cigarette, I haven't had a single craving for tobacco, and I have never looked back.

You would be surprised at what happens when curiosity takes over, I believe my curiosity is unmatched. life is just one big bag of experiences, but after you have had an experience, it's up to you what you do with that new information.

In my case it deff. wasn't curiosity.
I remember the evening exacty when I started smoking. I was a teenager:

I was out in a pub. A female friend of mine her boyfriend and me and (at this time) my boyfriend. The evening started nice, but then everything changed...
My friend wasn't there anymore, so I started looking for her, she sat on the stairs near to the restrooms on the flor and cryed that she didn't wanted to live anymore. She was dx shortly before that with diabetes type 1. I was down there a while, but went to our table again where my boyfriend was, because I wanted to get something. He explained me then that he want's to break up with me, then my mobile phone rang, my mom called, she freaked out, I should come home imediatly. Then, in this situation (I was always around smokers, but never smoked myself) I just asked for a cigarette.

Only alcohol can numb my senses enough to make smoking work for me. Otherwise, cigarette smoke can be instant overload. Sort of like the olfactory equivalent of running into a brick wall.

Given that the entire rest of my family except my nephew smokes, I think I somehow got lucky in that regard. I hope you can successfully quit, Chloe33.

I smoke menthol cigs, about 10 a day. I have done since 16 and am at the point, yet again, of wanting to quit.

I've tried to stop before and have managed to go without smoking for weeks & months with no physical cravings after the first couple of days, but the mental addiction is severe. And I've found there is no way I can have just one - after smoking one cig I'm as addicted as ever.

I've heard a lot of good things about the e-cigs so it might be worth a try for me. I like the sound of the flavoured juices you can get for them as well.

I'm telling you guys, if you want to quit try electronic cigarettes. I've said it before but I'll say it again- I started smoking when I was 12 and quit the day I bought an e cig., no craving for tobacco.

omg, i forgot to add electronic cigs as a poll category the other day.
We've tried them, my gf can smoke them, however when i attempt to smoke them i end up choking as i guess i don't understand how much i am inhaling of it and get too much.

Do all electronic cigs have nicotine in them or do they not have it?
I was unsure how to tell exactly how much is in the electronic cigarette. All i know is i come up choking on them as i can't gauge what i inhale with those for some reason...

I would need to find a brand that has little or no nicotine and that i can easily tell how much smoke i take in

I smoked for many years in the past. I once thought quitting was impossible. It is not impossible. However, it can very easily feel this way. I used to make every excuse I could imagine to fire up a smoke. A few consisted of: "It's raining out" (I'm a major fan of the rain and storms) "**** I'm bored..." "today sure sucks, **** it I'm smoking" That was when I was a active smoker. Very much actively addicted. I will admit I did find smoking to be a most enjoyable experience. Even if it was horrible. That's the worst part. Apart from how it made me feel, I happened to enjoy watching the smoke weave it's way in and out as it traveled through the air. Exhaling was equally as fun to watch, as was creating smoke rings. Cigarettes are your best friend and your worst enemy. Without question. It's always there for you and it wants you dead while it comforts you in the process.

Trying to stop brings new challenges because the excuses become all the more tempting to use. The excuses are after all so very convenient as they are by your own design. It is so very difficult to stop. This is especially true if you have a history of alcoholism, or use cigarettes as companions to other substances. Such was the case with myself in the past. To quit is difficult but not impossible. I quit CT and failed the first few attempts. My level of familiarity with that particular form of suffering eventually grew and I became stronger. The first 3 days are a living hell. If you can get past the first 3, you are on your way, but far from safe. After 2 weeks you have a better chance of making it. Even if you manage to stop for years there will still be a part of you that yearns to become reacquainted with a cigarette. You just have to keep fighting it. It does get easier but it will be with you for life. Consider it a manageable burden.

This is true, i can identify. Even my friend's dad who quit said he gets a cigarette craving like a 7 year itch type thing.

A lot of activities i am used to smoking. I'm trying to get my gf to quit/cut down with me otherwise its harder. I figure if i ban us from smoking in the house we'll smoke less yet i'm trying for a group effort with her.
Some things we're just used to like having a cig after dinner and things like that it's almost ritualistic behavior.
I would love to quit and stay quit for many health reasons. My gf has her own health reasons just as bad for her to quit also.

Yet i may try to limit myself (if i go out to ride my bike i only bring 3 cigs in my pack) that way i can't smoke more than that and will chew on my wood stick.

Well you know how it is, things have a way of turning into interests. Now I know pretty much everything about e cigs. I mix my own liquid now so I can make the liquid zero nicotine or any level I want. Most manufacturers of liquid sell it in 0, 6, 12,18, 24mg. Most moderate smokers will be fine with 12mg. I tapered 12mg down to 0. The nicotine level contributes a lot to the coughing so you were probably inhaling 18mg or higher.

What I like most about these is the volume of vapor they put out. I build my own coils and wicks with AWG 32 kanthal wire and #400 stainless steel mesh on a variable voltage vaporizer and it spits out vapor like a fog machine

Oh and it also costs 10 cents a day to operate vs the $2/day I was spending on cigs.

Never smoked and never wanted to, not even curious, the smell is enough to put me off never mind what it'll do to my lungs. It's one of those peer pressure things I just don't get.

When people smoke around me it makes my eyes water. This was worse when I was a taxi driver. The back seat customers lit up even though I told them there was no smoking. When they did my eyes would instantly get red and I'd have to stop driving the rest of the shift.

I don't smoke or use tobacco products, but I'm sure I get enough secondhand smoke to make up for the fact...

I smoke rather off and on, sometimes I will go a month hardly smoking any cigarettes...then sometimes its hard to get through a week without them. So the amount I smoke varies, also if I drink I end up smoking more which doesn't end up sitting so well.

I'll be the dissident here and say that not only am I a tobacco user, but I like being a tobacco user. I started very young, at 13, when I was taken off of Ritalin. When this happened, I lost all ability to concentrate. Nobody could stand to be around me, and I was failing at everything.

It has now been proven that nicotine has some very interesting properties. For me it helps with depression, concentration, and stabilizing my moods. A little research indicates nicotine has shown efficacy in treating profound autism and SIB's.

As far as tobacco being an "addiction", I don't find it that hard to quit, though I do miss it some when I'd done so. The fact is that I can't function without nicotine or something like it, and I have a very responsible job, as well as other obligations.

I would add that while I do smoke one cigarette every day--when I wake up--I normally use nasal snuff. Though it is politically incorrect to say, the scientists have been able to find little harmful in tobacco products unless they are smoked. Swedish snus is only the most prominent example.

To my detractors I would cite Mencken's quote: A puritan is one who is paralyzed with the fear that somebody somewhere might be enjoying themselves. I will do what is best for me regardless of whether anti-tobacco zealots approve or not.
