Neither my primary school nor my high school put on plays or nativities. I wouldn't have minded in the least. I went to dance classes and performed on stage several times a year, including fairly major productions, by our local amateur dramatics society. I had social anxiety, but stage fright was never an issue for me. I used to supervise this guy and he was really shy, introverted and scared to apply for promotion (I know this doesn't equate to having an ASD). He was really into acting and performing never phased him. He was a completely different person on stage.

^This^ In fact, I would rather act in front of a crowd or give a rehearsed speech in front of a crowd than have a spontaneous interaction with someone I don't know or someone I don't know well.

There are plenty of behind-the-scenes things that need to happen to pull off a good play. I think that is an appropriate place for tweens and teens. But in the early grades, I think most kids just get stuck in an uncomfortable position unless their parents stand up and say no.

I didn't. It was mandatory all through Elementary School, I didn't have an issue with it then. All Middle School and High School plays were voluntary, and it wasn't until then that it had any effect on me. I'm not sure I could handle one now, though I'd be much more likely to attempt than I was back then.

I quite loved it. I even stole the stage in our Christmas Play when I was 11 years old, and I was only one of the narrators (we had to narrate on stage, center stage)! :P

I couldn't escape any Christmas plays. But I did enjoy doing them. When I was age 4-7, we mostly done singing in the Christmas plays, so nobody really talked. When I was 8 we done a Christmas play where more kids had lines, but I was never given any. When I was 9 the teacher wanted everybody to have a line, but he only gave me a very short line, which I was OK with. I do remember feeling nervous before my line came, but I was OK once I said what I had to say. And when I was 10 I missed my Christmas play because I got the flu, which was a shame because that was my last ever Christmas play. They didn't have Christmas plays at high school, only primary school.

But the Christmassy atmosphere always put me in a good mood, which made me feel excited about the play. And I loved it when my parents came to watch us.

I had to do school plays during elementary school.
I couldn't excape it, but that wasn't a big problem, since the teacher always gave me minor roles in the plays, since I totally sucked at acting.
The only time I got a role that was a bit more important was in 5th grade. It wasn't an important role, it was always a minor one, but a bit mre important than those that were usually given to me.
