Yeah. I don't think you can blame it on religion. I've met atheists who were absolutely nasty, horrible people, but I can't judge all atheists by their example. I don't think you should judge all religious people by the example of a few fanatics. Even if they use religion as an excuse, that doesn't make the religion bad. I feel very frustrated and sad to see people use my faith as a reason to hate each other, to exploit each other. Jesus seems to have felt the same way, or he wouldn't have tossed the merchants out of the temple. For those of you who didn't go to Sunday school, these were the guys taking advantage of the temple grounds to sell extremely overpriced offerings to the public; they probably had a monopoly, too. Jesus accused them of turning the temple into a den of thieves, overturned their tables, and chased them out. With a whip. (Badass.)
If you don't trust religion because of what religious people did to you, at least do yourself the favor of giving the situation a critical, logical examination. Would they have done the same if they weren't religious, and just have found another excuse? I think they would have, because I see that kind of behavior from all people, whatever faith they are, or lack thereof. I can't tell you that you've got to believe in one thing or another--true faith isn't forced. But wouldn't it be a shame if you gave up the opportunity to discover something much greater than yourself, simply because some ignorant people tried to make it fit into their bigoted mind-set?

To the OP, i am sorry you had to deal with such folks. Its sounds like a bunch of publicity from this hyped up Illuminati theme people like to gossip on. Why they actually believe it i don't know.
Some things are just boggling.... like that airport in Denver...
We've always had secret societies, we probably always will. Yet if everyone knows they aren't secret anymore.
It sad if people are judging others for being gay or religiousness levels.
Are they the type of friends that you'd want to keep forever? There are other open minded moreso people out there.
I do not mean to be mean by saying that. You shouldn't have to live and worry about your friends judging you.
True friends just don't judge they friends
Imo, those folks are just mentally deranged
Seconded.
People willfully deluded. Basically people who can, frighteningly, believe the products of their overactive imaginations. People like these are drawn to either mainstream religion or the occult.
To the OP; how can you stand their company? I couldn't trust anyone like that, even hanging out casually.
Okay - my two cents worth.
Religion is created purely due to the fact that those who had lesser education/understanding/logical reasoning for their world around them needed some way of explaining the world around them. I'm from a very strong Christian upbringing and the more my logical reasoning skills developed, the more I began to pick apart the belief structures of those around me. This caused some rather 'interesting' dinner conversations as a young adult. Ultimately, religion was used as an excuse to destroy a relationship that was at the time very important to me and it was at this stage that I became essentially 'Atheistic'. I think, in essence, religion itself is the conspiracy, created to control the masses (those being driven by emotion and devoid of logical reasoning). And as for secret societies... if the Illuminati was a secret society, how would we know about their existence... the fact that they have a name for it means it cant be a secret!
I think the problem with your friends is a very unfortunate cocktail of misinformation, superstition, delusion and at its core, a strange need to believe in something bigger than they are........ a strange need for faith. That's not to say that I am totally against religion. It does a lot of what it sets out to achieve. It teaches morals and provides a sense of community. I think that all of us as Aspies can agree that without religion, those driven by emotional urge and response would make our world a very difficult place to live in.
