Or you could always leave the original error and put [sic] after it.

The sentence I quoted above should read, "I wish I WEREN'T so preoccupied with grammatical mishaps." Past subjunctive.

Damn.

I get mildly irked when people say things like "I could care less" when they mean " I couldNT care less", or 'infer' when they mean 'imply', or when they wrongly INFER that IMHO means 'in my HONEST opinion" when it should be obvious to anyone with common sense that it really means "in my humble opinion".

But I dont tear my hair and have meltdowns over it.

If you cant control yourself emotionally over something that trivial than that IS rude.

True - but they'd be more likely to notice what I'd done! At least the way I do it they probably don't notice and can't call me out on it :D

BTW, I've always wanted to know what [sic] means. I kind of worked out maybe it means 'spelling in context' but that's probably totally wrong - please tell!

It bothers me when poor grammar and spelling is used, but some people just can't help it even if they try.

My best friend is a fine example of this.

It is Latin for "thus". When quoting a text people put that word behind an error to show they have noticed the mistake but chose to leave the quote intact. Essentially they are aware they are quoting a mistake.

I get upset when someone forgets to close the bracket.

Sorry. Can't help doing this again due to the nature of the thread...

"It bothers me when poor grammar and spelling ARE used."

Hope I don't seem arrogant. I'm doing this for the thread only, in jest. Again, I'd never do this in another context. That is just plain rude and condescending. But I know the people posting here actually care about grammar rules. If I make a grammar error, I want somebody to point it out, so that I can learn the rule and fix it in the future.

I used to.

But then I realized that some people have a hard time with words in the same way I have trouble with numbers.

I got over it.

I take issue with lazy or bad grammar; especially in writing. I don't count it as lazy or poor grammar if the speaker (writer) is new to the English language, or if they have a disability which may affect speech or mental capacity. I think that being bothered by the use of poor grammar is indeed more common among Aspies than in the NT population in general.

I do not say anything to anyone, but when I am alone, I scream and have an outburst when I encounter something unpleasant, language-wise, such as when an English speaker uses /ei/ as indefinite article. (grrr!) The problems are worse in my native Swedish, since I gradually have found out that the official form of Swedish is a lie - the language really has three genders, not two, and ten vowels, not nine, and there are some differences in the realisation of consonants.

I react the same way. It isn't every error (there are probably some I'm not even aware of) but certain ones almost cause me physical discomfort. I get hung up and have a compulsive urge to correct them. It has nothing to do putting people down or wanting to look smart, although I know that's how it looks to others and try to resist it for that reason. It's just that the "wrongness" gets under my skin and makes the whole world feel askew and disordered. I guess it could be compared to having a hangnail, or looking at a crooked painting.

I find it annoying as even though I'm dyslexic I take pains over spelling and I see so many people I work with who are supposedly really clever actually use the wrong version of a word (like they say "route cause" when describing a failure in a product when it should be "root cause"). I also generally take pains in making sure what i write makes sense often taking pains re-reading up to 3-4 times to make sure I'm not conveying the wrong meaning as people often misunderstand me and I often just go straight to the point and forget pleasantries or ensuring they are familiar enough with what I'm on about.

It does not overly stress me out though, I just think they are idiots as they think they are so clever but can't convey their so called cleverness with the correct words, I don't have time for long and well written emails, they do.

I apologize to all the people that have cringed at my posts. I have a learning disability which causes my spelling to be off at times or quite frequently. See I sorta fall on the other side of the spectrum who has frequent spelling mistakes. Ok so admittedly, I can proofread before I post and catch a lot of them but then this is a informal forum so I dont give sh*t. When I IM or post on forums, I want to spend the energy trying to have good spelling and grammer cause I have to focus on that sh*t doing formal writing. Forums and IMing is meant to be fun....not work.
So all apologies :(

My former co-worker was dyslexic had really really bad spelling so ironically I was correcting his spelling ALOT. After working with him, I became a lot less self-conscious of my spelling in formal writing. Before I used to freak out all the time! :x

try using a spell corrector ? I do but often it is typos more than actual errors, I try to type faster than I can and my quality of typing varies widely from day to day so some days I just have to be patient and slow down, others I'm going at it like a machine gun with little to no errors. I tried speech recognition but I've always got the radio on or something and I can't formulate things verbally quickly enough so it ends up being faster to type.
