I used to be terrified of images of Neanderthal skulls and other such ape like skulls.

Iron brackets under the older style beds.

Lift machines with the long chains.

Factory hoppers.

A certain kind of burrowing insect on plants (I don’t like to discuss this one)

The sound of a jaws harp or shepherds pipe. This has something to do with the sound of overtones and the harmonic series.

Siren-like glissandos on strings

Caterwauling at night

A gibbous moon

I can cope with most of this now, but as a child, I was absolutely terrified

The poisoned apple in Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

Anyone else around here afraid of, er, drains, faucets, bathrooms, stormdrains, or well, the uh, plumbing or openings in the plumbing? It's just horrible. If I'm around something like that in the dark, I'll just start running como alma que lleva el diablo as they say.

I have an irrational fear of the eating-places at my school. It’s caused me to stop eating, which I know isn’t good, but I just can’t go and get food at them. I only eat when someone drags me off to lunch or dinner. Really though, I’m afraid of anyplace that has a lot of people, like the library and the union, and anywhere on campus, but those phobia’s don’t affect my health quite as much.

I also am afraid of people in those large fuzzy costumes of like Smokey the Bear and Mickey Mouse. This has been a long-standing fear.

I don’t like the sound of paper shuffling, or cutlery clattering, and I don’t like the sound of people shuffling when they walk, or of people eating loudly. Really, I just don’t like noise in general. I always adjust my walk to move silently.

Agreed. I also used to be terrified of germs, and I still am, but I am very proud of myself because I don’t have to wash my hands every five minutes like I used to. But I’m still afraid of “dirty” things like bathrooms, sinks, shoes, and anything that’s been outside.

I have a fear of malls and of flying. The common thread is the feeling of being trapped.

Oh wow... I was afraid of them because they reminded me of spiders!

Scraping noises, I imagine quite vivid images of fingernails coming off, I am not that squeamish, and if it's on a screen or something not at all. But scraping noises made by knives or forks on plates, or nails on blackboards, or any scraping noise (even some pens), and I usually end up covering my ears, as my dad and sister think it's funny. Other phobias I have are of "squeaky" clean glasses and other glass stuff. It's the slight drag on your fingers I hate, as I imagine the fingerprint on my hand being made of thin strips of flesh, and them coming apart, not pleasent, no is the sensation of touching them. And finaly, a common one (Though I dont know how I got it) fear of spiders... I hate them, in though love watching them if they are on the other side of some glass.

I literally started crying when I saw this.
I've spent most of life in my room because I can't stand the sound of crunching.
My family thought I was just trying to get attention.

ANYWAY, when I found this I automatically looked up the symptoms of Aspergers and found that I have mostly every single one of them.

THANK YOU!
You made me feel that I wasn't crazy.

When I was a kid I was terrified of dolls and manikins
But now I have a fetish for love dolls.

The problem for me is a "smacking" noise while talking, although the sound of it while someone is eating can be rough for me, as well. I suspect the problem is getting worse. Either that, or there is an epidemic of it in the world. I am an information junkie, so I love to listen to podcasts, but I am finding myself having to skip more and more of them because of the sounds people are making while talking on them. It isn't just an annoyance that I can get over, because trying to "suck it up" and "deal with it" makes me feel physically ill. At least it has been a little comforting to know that others have a similar problem, but I fear that becoming more sensitive to it is going to present a quality of life problem for me.

I hate eating/smacking/breathing sounds too. I hate when my hubby comes in and eats near me - he smacks like crazy.

As for actual phobias, I'm arachnophobic and claustrophobic.

i have a fear of insects.
i once went on a vacation to greece and it was hot there.
'bullets' of sweat trickled down my back, and i would panic.
i cannot describe the horrible feeling it gave me.

I believe that I have a mild form of acrophobia, as well as a dislike for strong smells and loud noises, though I'm so introverted that I rarely let it be known.

I can't stand the sound of certain noises - people kissing is one of them, although eating etc is not so bad. However, I wouldn't describe it as a phobia - it is physically unpleasant and can make me very annoyed, but I'm not afraid of it. I also hate hearing any noise from other people when I am in my flat - this invasion of privacy is annoying and can build up into anxiety, (which is a type of fear) and put me on edge and make everything slightly sinister. However, I wouldn't really describe this as a phobia either, although it does affect my life.

When I was a child I did have a phobia about fire - I frequently had very scary nightmares and was terrified to the extent of becoming pannicked if I was left alone in the sitting room with the open fire on, or had to hold a sparkler or a match. It has diminished now and I am fine with bonfires and candles etc., but still have a horror of things that have been burnt (buildings or people), and I am sure that the phobia is still there under the surface, covered over by adult rationality - only last summer I had a couple of nightmares about my flat being burnt out which I woke up from terrified. It doesn't really affect my life as it did as a child however, so maybe it isn't really a phobia either any more.

I skip podcasts like that, too. The sound of a tongue moving in the mouth, saliva popping and pulling away. Arggghgh! I don't notice it in real life but radio people get right up on the mic and capture/amplify all those sticky, wet sounds.

Loud/open chewing distracts me, and gum popping completely freaks me out. My Dear Wife becomes unhinged by chewing sounds. Interestingly, I find the sounds of farm animals chewing loudly rather comforting.
