Recent studies are showing that prolonged use of risperdol may cause brain shrinkage, particularly brain cortex volumes.

The studies discuss certain doses over prolonged periods of time. So I wouldn't cold turkey or get too concerned, but I would be thinking about another solution for long term.

OK; what other things could I take, then?

It depends on what you're on it for. Talk to your doctor. I was on Risperdal but it was increasing my appetite way too much. My parents mentioned it to my doctor (I was still in elementary school) and he put me on Seroquel instead. There's still a mild effect on my appetite but it's nothing like it was on Risperdal.

Your situation could be different. I don't know what Risperdal is doing for you and Seroquel might not serve the same purpose. It might be another medication that does the trick. You should work with your psychiatrist to try and find a medication and a dosage that works and has the most tolerable side effects. You might go through a few medications before you find the best one.

I've never taken risperidone (which I'd speculated to be similar to halperidone, eg Haldol) but I have been on Seroquel, and if it is anything similar, you don't want to be on either unless you're hearing voices or a serious DTSO. Maybe something to manage the more ADHD-like traits would be a better fit, have you tried Strattera or Intuniv? I did take Adderall for 3 years and at first it was like a long-shut door in my brain was opened again but as it set in I began having more frequent and intense meltdowns, so I went back on Strattera and it's brought some of my music interest back, though not like it was at its peak, that said I haven't filled my increased dosage yet either

My experience with Seroquel hasn't been that bad. I've been on it most of my life and it does help. I do agree that it's being overprescribed off label but I do believe it can be helpful for people without psychotic disorders.

I'm not sure why I was prescribed Risperdal and later Seroquel instead of something else that could have also helped but I believe it has to do with my number of comorbid conditions that are all helped in some way by the combination of meds I'm on. If one pill can treat multiple of my disorders at once it could easily be worth it. Seroquel acts as an augmentation agent for my Clomipramine which is the primary drug used for my OCD. While on it the tics that acompany my Tourette's syndrome are kept under control. It also sedates me so my insomnia is no problem. I have a diagnosis of ADHD but I'm not sure if it's accurate. I thought my medication was controlling it but then I came off my medication for a week for a stupid reason and I didn't notice any ADHD symptoms.

It hasn't been that bad.

I take Risperdal. I've never been told exactly what for, but I suspect some kind of mild psychosis. I don't know if it's correlation or coincidence, but over the past year, I haven't felt nearly as passionate about anything as I was before (loss of special interests and being unable to acquire new ones). I've also had the dosage of my Risperdal increased a couple of times over the past year. The only thing is, I can't remember what came first, the boredom or the increased dosage, or if the boredom was already there but the increased dosage made it worse.
