Given the choice, I would not have chosen to be human.

I don't believe that I have enough information to properly answer this question.

I also wonder about the possibility that I did have such an option before birth and just don't remember it.

It's hard to say. At this point, I still have some Aspie in me, but I relate to NT's so much more generally speaking.

I might've chose NT if I had a choice for that reason, but then again, I'm happy where I am, so win-win.

I'd choose to be born NT because my life is hell. I'm chronically anxious and frequently depressed due to my inability to relate or get along with people. I'm frequently overwhelmed by life and can't be alone either. I need things to be a certain way but can't ask people for what I need because their needs aren't the same or they don't understand. I get stressed out easily, and since I can't relate well with people, there aren't too many people who can really help. Having Aspergers also means that I communicate oddly, so people don't understand the depth of my despair or how overwhelmed I feel.

My thoughts on this are back and forth. My first thought is "Of course I want to be NT, having AS sucks!" But it wouldn't fix everything. Being NT wouldn't make my parents love me, they would still be abusive. I would probably still be a nerd if I kept any of my "me-ness" at all. That would make me an outcast still. I would lose all of my talents that are due purely to AS.

But just on sensory issues alone, I voted to be NT. They are sheer hell for me and their absence would be a huge improvement, regardless of the other effects.

I'd choose to be born AS, because it enriches my personality and makes me an interesting person.

I would choose to be an elephant. I like elephants: they are huge, intelligent and, outside of poachers, no animal dares to cross their paths (there are some rare exceptions, like desperately hungry lions).

Nah, I am joking: I chose NT. Why? Because, as it was pointed out by qawer, it is merely a matter of self-esteem. And I have none: I am very unsatisfied with who I am.

Sorry for this terrible joke, by the way.

The notion proposed is absurd. If time were to be reversed and the entity with my name born again, that entity would not be me until he established my memories. I'd choose AS, because that's the only way I could ever exist again. I care nothing for some hypothetical entity that has my name, looks like me and is not me.

I believe that it's hard to know where one's own Asperger's begins and where their personality ends. That is to say, my Asperger's doesn't define me, but it is an integral part of me, how I perceive the world, and how I grew up. So it's simply difficult to imagine my life any differently at this point.

I could do without the anxiety and depression. If I could change that, I probably would (aside from medication). But ultimately, I feel that my challenges make my more empathetic towards other people with disabilities- and in that way, I like to think that I can be of use to them in ways that a neurotype might not (which isn't to say that NTs can't be good support for people with disabilities- I just offer a different perspective).

I probably wouldn't chose to have children biologically, however. I think my family is quite unique, but there's a lot of pain that comes with this disorder. I would much rather adopt somebody who already has a disability, rather than create another like myself.

It's so hard to say. I mean, I like being me and being unique, but it is hard at times, especially being undiagnosed (somehow), and trying to live a normal life without being able to think the same as everyone else. I see arguments both ways. I'm putting "I'm not sure" due to the fact I really am not sure.

Why does that surprise you?

You would expect a greater number of people to NOT want a handicap, than to want a handicap.
