What do you think the future holds for us?

I was talking in PM with someone here, and after being told the new "rules" on who is and isn't autistic ("Level 1", "Level 2", "Level 3") had to ask-
"If even level one says the person needs 'support' and even with that 'support' still has serious problems interacting and such... Where does that leave high funtioning people? Will people like Temple Grandin, John Robison, or even Alex Plank still be able to say 'I'm autistic', or will they no longer meet the 'requirements'?"
Seems that question remains unanswered, but if the person functions without 'support', how could they even fit into the "Level 1" description?
And if not there, then what does the person say about themself? I mean, they still have some "quirks" as far as the NT world goes.
They certainly can't be described as neuro-typical, because they DO have aspects of autism to their thinking and personalities.
So where does that leave them?
Back to being called "weirdo"?
What about youngsters in that situation? Kids who last year would have plainly been identified as on the spectrum, now they'll never be described as "autistic"? If so, then what WILL they be called?

The doc who diagnosed my son said that he will be diagnosed after the change--she said mild ASD which I guess would be level 1 in this scheme.
Slightly worse. The more people around you know about your condition, the easier it is to use it against you.
Sethno, anyone with autistic traits who will fall outside the autism criteria, might say they're BAP, unless that one disappears too.
Edit: BAP = broad autism phenotype

I think stigmatization across the board is being discouraged as intolerance, political incorrectness, hate crime etc.
But you can't force people not hate or be fearful of that which is different. You can only get them to at least pretend to be accepting.
I have an internet friend who's an MD. He's an exceptionally kind and compassionate individual. But he confided in me that he feels uneasy around patients who are autistic. Especially autistic children. I think it's one of those primal things. To be leery of those who are different.
I know there are people who are nice to me and who probably actually like me, who are also leery of me. But then again, I'm leery of them too

I see a hill ... a grassy hill ... rocks and boulders ... near water ... the letters "J" and "M" feature prominently ...

In my case, it's what they didn't know about me that they held against me. That there was "no excuse" for my behavior. Or they attributed my behavior to things that weren't true about me. Gossiped about me. I'd rather lay my cards on the table, rather than leave it up to people to make stuff up about me. I make them aware of my autism, hence autism awareness.

Have you tried it yet? Or are you speaking hypothetically? If you have good experience with being open, count yourself very lucky.
Personally I'd rather let them think what they want than mention autism. In my experience we can try explaining it to judgement day; all those who judge us will hear is "I was right all along, s/he is a ret*d!" (or "f-ing mongo" in my case). Being open about that will only add fuel to the fire. And those who used to treat you like an adult of normal intelligence before, will start talking to you like you suddenly became severely ret*d. Or get very uncomfortable around you.
With recent shooting episodes where they tried to blame AS, these days "psycho" might be used as well. I know some have been called that, but I don't know how prevalent it is.
I'm not taking that chance ever again IRL. Besides family and employment agency, no one knows and that's the way it's gonna stay.

A picnic! Near the stream on the rocky hill, with jam sandwiches.
