I always assume it's someone trying to be funny. Once, someone came up behind me and beeped, and I turned around with an annoyed look, but it turned out to be someone from work offering to give me a lift up the road. I felt kind of bad, but it usually IS someone trying to be funny.

The noise bothers me greatly and I rarely use my own.

With good measure...those things are supposed to be used for emergencies.

Yeah it is, too bad the police don't seem to care about it here (never seen anyone ticketed for it, probably as too many people do it and the road is usually too congested to pull people over for it)

You're right - it's a smart invention when used properly but often misused by dumb users.

I hate the car horns. I startle easily and when someone honks at me for no reason, I visibly jump and my first instinct is to cover my ears. Not a good thing to do whilst driving! But car alarms...those are the absolute worst.

Thieves in LR would throw a brick or something thru the window to see if there was an alarm, you still got a smashed window.
And I hate alarm clocks, even on tv.
Last time I was at an airport (been almost 30years) I stupidly stood by a pole with a red siren thing on it.When the baggage came out it buzzed and I jumped, cussed like a sailor, and grabbed my daughters arm.It was embarrassing, there were little kids there

Horns don't bother me usually, but I always hear car doors slamming at night.

Which is even more reason not to use them unnecessarily.

I ride my bike a lot, and people find it amusing to try and startle me. They honk their horn and sometimes yell out the window. There was this one car that had a megaphone on it's roof and they were trying to startle people. I don't see the amusement. They're bullies, they get off by making others suffer.

True!
Maybe more people than we think are face blind, and pap at people thinking they're some person they know, when they're not.

I hate them. I mean, it's not surprising, but I always jump when I hear a car horn, or a sudden noise like that. A lot of people think I am nervous, or that I'm just 'jumpy', but I can be perfectly relaxed, and then I'll hear something like that, and just freak out.

I generally only honk mine for safety issues, such as another driver drifting into my lane while I'm in it. Or if a driver is not paying attention, the light turns green and he/she does not move, and that beep will be a short toot just to bring him/her back to attention.
Musical car horns can be pretty--- I've always loved the Dukes of Hazard and the singing Dodge Charger. I also think those very old fashioned "Ah-OOO-ga" horns are cute and they make me feel like I have traveled back in time. However, those "train horns" some people have are terrible. People with these often sneak up behind people and honk loudly just to see them jump or fall. In my s tate, we have many of these. They hurt the ears and can be scary!

Me too. It's like people are constantly going out and coming home, and I'm thinking, "It's MIDNIGHT, go to BED!"

I wonder if it annoys me so much because I relate the sound to people coming home and disrupting my solitude...

People are gonna use it for whatever they please and no ranting is gonna change anyone's behavior. I say if you want to be less annoyed by car horns loosen up about 'em. Or perhaps crank your stereo?

I use it to express displeasure, get people's attention in rare cases, and to warn other inattentive drivers. Gonna continue to too.

I hate it when show-offs think the horn is a toy and honks it just to draw attention, as if to say "hey everybody look at me I'm an obnoxious 17-year-old prick who needs to be heard!"
One time I was walking along a street and this car came along with a driver that was honking his horn on and off but nonstop, thinking it was great. I felt like saying, "yes, it's called a car horn, so pleased you've figured that out!"

One time I was waiting at a bus stop, and a car came along and honked the horn really loudly the second it passed me, and I didn't know the people in it and nobody waved anyway, so that made me angry. It startled me so much that it took me about an hour to get over the shock.
