If such isn't worth it, then the underlying disorders probably aren't too bad and don't need treatment.
Yes, except (1) Lexapro made my depression much worse and made me a zombie; (2) zoloft took care of my depression but turned me into a sociopath who committed criminal acts and hurt others with little remorse at the time. It basically takes all the anger I usually have turned inwards and turns it outwards.
Weight gain sucks. If I were female, I would probably have BDD. Even being male, I may meet the criteria but don't want to admit it or get evaluated for it. So having extra fat makes me depressed and anxious on its own. I am also the type of guy who looks really good with low body fat but rapidly plummets in looks even when moderately overweight. So I go from 7.5/10 to maybe 4/10 very quickly.
I can recoment agomelatine, what has hardly any side effects and I take it because I get severe side effects from most anti depressents.
I take Valdoxan.

But I'm not sure if it's available in the US already.
To Lithium:
How others have mentioned, lithium is a mood stabalizer and should be taken when you have Bipolar. It doesn't really help much with rapid cycling and also not really by BPD. A friend of mine with BPD took it and it didn't help her at all, but they weren't sure at that time what she has.
The only known mood stabalizer who can also have positive effects in people with BPD is Lamotrigine:

Its worked wonders for me and I have not noticed any negative side affects except for lower blood pressure but after you are used to it, it is fine.
It all depends on each person though. cause we are all different and this is a fairly lite antidepressant if I do say so myself

You could try taking tryptophan daily and see if it makes a difference. It's an amino acid available from most health food stores which essentially has the same effect as an anti depressant.
I'm not sure if it will be strong enough for you or not, but there's always a chance.

Further study is required to determine the frequency of this phenomenon, whether it is associated primarily with SSRI antidepressants, whether usually associated with the presence of sexual dysfunction, and what the functional implications of these symptoms are. We speculate that in some patients, rather than representing a side-effect, blunting of emotions may be the central therapeutic effect of SSRIs.
In some with OCD it damaged the frontal lobes too.
I know you don't need this, but here's what the anterior cingulate does:

I went to a psychologist for the first time about two weeks ago at the suggestion of my therapist, and he prescribed fluoxetine (Prozac). I have noticed I've been sleeping better and have not had as many compulsions, they are still there, but easier to control or avoid. He said it was a fairly common medicine to treat anxiety and/or depression for people with ASD.
The only possible side effect I have noticed is occasionally feeling light-headed and not feeling a mental reaction to something I would expect (such as expecting an anxiety attack from a stimuli, but I don't get the actual feeling of one). I suppose that could be a part of the "zombie" feeling people describe? It has improved my morale overall, but I do worry a little that it might impact my performance at work on the basis that I won't be as motivated by compulsion to complete something to my usual standards.

Wellbutrin (budeprion) is the only one that doesn't give me undesirable side effects.
For me, "undesirable side effects" usually means they make me sleepy. That, and just feeling "off" or "weird" have been the main reasons for me to discontinue treatment with antidepressants, which I have done quite a few times. I've been on Wellbutrin for probably 10 years on and off.
On the other hand, I'm still depressed, but I'm awake. I'm not sad. I feel OK. The big thing is, I'm not getting things done. Maybe, more overwhelmed than depressed, idk.
Marijuana, seriously...
Antidepressants never worked for me and they always had unpleasant side effects to say the least. My brother was on Zoloft for a while, it made him seem like a completely different person and he attempted to overdose on the pills not long after starting taking them.
If it helps you then by all means, take what you have to take but I'd avoid taking antidepressants unless I explored all other options.
Lithium definatley has side effects, its a nasty drug, should really be a last resort in treating bipolar disorders. Mood stabilizers generally aren't great for unipolar depression, or great for treating depression in bipolar, really. A lot of have to be on anti-depressants alongside mood stabilizers, or on an mood stabilizer that has some "antidepressant" power. Lithium just leaves a lot of people depressed, it's more used to treat mania rather than depression.
What kind of side effects do you mean anyway? SSRI's (such as Celexa, Prozac. Lexapro) are to supposed to have the least side effects. Celexa is supposed to cause the least weight gain. But a lot of people don't like the "it kills my sex drive" side effect that SSRI's have.
