Then it will probably be high functioning autism.

AS is being reclassified as being part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder instead of being a seperate diagnosis altogether.

While the situation is obvious (AS being reclassified), I fail to see any real problems with it.

    Ditto.

I don't see what the problem is either. People will still have AS but the name is just being changed to autism level one.

I do not throw stones at you, but I did point out your arguments were not rational nor did they make any sense. They still do not.

You're professing a personal belief while claiming that anyone who disagrees with you is doing so out of "religious reasons." This is rather bizarre because there's no research, no evidence, no facts, to support your assertions that AS never existed, but there is research, evidence, and facts to support the diagnosis that many people have received - that their substantial impairments and symptoms that meet particular patterns justify a diagnosis on the autistic spectrum.

Quote:
The reason people throw stones at you is because while AS isn't exactly a religion, having a diagnosis is a status symbol, at least amongst some of the younger crowd. What has become a secular religion is the Political Correctness that infects the entire modern world, including this site.

What most people who object to political correctness seem to object to is the notion that it's not okay to treat people terribly because of their skin color, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc. If not wanting to tolerate such a behavior is an "infection" then I'd rather have that infection then consider, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ethnocentrism, ableism/disableism, etc. acceptable.

If it is such a burden on you to actually not treat people badly for spurious and superficial reasons, then the problem is not the rest of the world being politically correct. The problem is people thinking it's okay to treat people badly.

Wow. Jeez. Of course it's still there. It's just under a different name...
Religion? I think not.

Because diabetics would never make their condition into a 'religion'. They would happily die if the medical community just defined their condition out of existence.

Same with cancer, and emphasema, and AIDS, and leprosy.

Hell...even cold suffers and folks with tooth decay wouldnt care. IF Nyguil and robatussin vanished from the shelves cold sufferers wouldnt care.

No one would care if their teeth started falling out.

If the AMA says 'tooth decay doesnt exist" then tooth ache sufferers would all just suck it in because they would never even THINK of turning tooth decay "into a religion".

You have a confusion between what physically exists (e.g. bacteria, divided cells) and that which cannot be seen but we define meaning to it anyways (e.g. psychological conditions). If you've ever seen A Charlie Brown Christmas before, there's a scene where Lucy lists symptoms and gives each one a disorder name (e.g. you have felineophobia if you're afraid of cats). AS is the same thing - Someone has X type of personality must have Y condition. You'd rather sit inside and play video games by yourself all day instead of playing soccer with all the other kids, then you must have aspergers! I believe the same thing about ADD, especially how it gets diagnosed. Not paying attention in class regardless of how boring the subject material is? BOOM, you have ADD. Hence why these conditions are not taken very seriously in the medical community. Even if AS did exist, the symptoms of it can be cured - not with a magic pill but through determination...and there is plenty of actual physical evidence of that happening.

I believe on this site, I'm very nice compared to how people treat themselves.

Oh, the definition of AS should be changed to an objective critera based on documented verbal and/or nonverbal communications and neurological processing differences, but that's not the same as saying that the entire concept should be thrown out.

As some would say, "What gets measured matters, and what matters gets measured".

As to symptoms and/or determination, perhaps you'd like to explain that to individuals who have all of the objective critera and then some to perform a skilled job, and yet are rejected because they don't "measure up" on a subjective "social life" scale.

Edited to correct errors in the 3rd paragraph.

No.
You are the one who is confused.
Deeply confused.

you're confusing existence with tangibility.

A piece of rock is tangible ( you can touch it).
Money is abstract- the paper its made of is tangible, but not the value folks attach to it.

But the fact that money is intangible doesnt mean it isnt real.

And diabetes cant be cured with a magic pill either. But that doesnt mean that it isnt real.

And when did the "medical community" stop taking its own concepts seriously?

To paraphrase you, AS and ADD are personality/character flaws to which everyone needs to pull themselves out of by their bootstraps? You must be related to my family somehow.
Let's completely ignore the physical differences in neural connectivity which have been documented.

In the context I wrote those words (which is not the normal usage), "Social Life" can be an interchangible subjective barrier to those who arn't "cool enough" (have low social status), and particularly in the case of (whatever term you advocate for what was termed "AS" in DSM-IV-TR), "just don't fit in".

"Life of the party" probably would be a good fit in that sentence, subjective enough that it covers most of the implied meanings, but enough common usage that the implied meanings can be recieved.

ADHD is not taken very seriously by people who are largely ignorant about it and believe what popular culture and media tells them about ADHD. People who are actually involved in the science and keep up to date with said science understand that ADHD is quite real and quite impairing for those have it.

The belief that all it takes is "not paying attention in class" is a popular but wildly incorrect belief. The truth is that to be diagnosed one must experience impairments in at least two areas, not just one, or just a fraction of one. That means impairments at home and school, or work and school, or home and work.

All you're doing here is spreading misinformation. You do not appear to be very informed about AS or ADHD, yet you expound as if you have sufficient expertise to make these claims. This makes it impossible to take your statements seriously or view them as anything other than nonsense.

CADDAC released a paper on people diagnosed with ADHD as adults;

http://stream1.newswire.ca/media/2013/0 ... _28112.pdf

Not really something that would be true of a massively overdiagnosed condition, I think.

MacDragard, as other people have said here, you seem to be the confused one. I can't tell which one of these you do believe. Please select one or clarify your position:

1. "AS" does not exist. Nobody has symptoms that occur together like social impairments, repetitive behaviors, and obsessive interests.

2. "AS" does not exist. While people do have various symptoms like social impairments, repetitive behaviors, and obsessive interests, it is wrong to group them together as one thing.

3. "AS" does not exist. While people do have a collection of various symptoms that occur together like social impairments, repetitive behaviors, and obsessive interests, it is wrong to consider these things a medical or pathological condition.

4. "AS" does exist as a medical condition, but it is overdiagnosed. Some people with the label of "AS" do not actually have the required collection of symptoms.

5. "AS" does exist as a medical condition, but some or all of the criteria for diagnosis are wrong. Social impairments or other requirements are not actually consistent symptoms of the medical condition "AS".

Nicely logical summary there, yes.

Sometimes it's hard to explain what you mean because you don't really have words for it, just vague feelings. Something feels wrong or right, true or false, and you don't know where the origin of those feelings is, nor even whether they reflect reality. Stepping back and analyzing what facts you believe are true and why they are true may help. Build support for each idea, watch out for fallacies, and you may be able to better define what you are trying to say.
