My favorite is the powder Winchester uses in the Super-X .44 Magnum (240 grain JSHP. Though I recall the older JSP smelling the same).

The powder was probably W296 and it does have a rather pleasant aroma to it. :)

I've never had to use anything beyond foam plugs, and I've shot everything up to and including .300 Ultramags, .338 Lapua mag, .50 BMG, etc. I wouldn't shoot rifles indoors if you're that concerned, that can get a little intense, but otherwise I'd say have at it.

You have to control your thoughts, breathing, and heart rate or you will not be consistent or accurate. I run the lane when I place targets. This gets my heart rate and breathing way out of whack. I have to settle these before I can hit. I run the lane to force myself to practice this control. Another way I practice this is to shoot my VERY light 12oz trigger (.22 bolt action CZ) next to someone banging away with a semi-auto rifle (like a 30-06 M1 Garand). I have to squeeze my shot off during his pow, pow pows with his hot brass landing around me (wear a hat with a back brim so you don't get burnt). If I flinch, I miss.

My version of this is to warm up with a .44 mag Desert Eagle pistol before switching over to my 1911, the .45 feels like a .22 target pistol after shooting a few mags of .44s out of a 5lb handgun. Incidentally, this is by far the most practical use I've yet found for a Desert Eagle, but it sure is a fun toy to have.

If you're feeling ambitious and are somewhat handy, you could build one from a parts kit; it's not that hard and requires a minimum of tools.

Depends on what bothers you. Probably best to avoid an indoor range to begin with; industrial fans can be annoying (droooooone), as can the muzzle blast bouncing off the walls (it's a lot louder indoors).

Plugs under muffs (as mentioned) + being outdoors will make it seem quiet.

Seconded about outdoors. I have only shot at an indoor range once. It was torture. Out door ranges are MUCH better. Especially if the bays are spaced apart.
