Like Grahamguitarman I was diagnosed at Sheffield in a two hour appointment. I didn't think it was obvious but was horrified at the report! They are very good there.

Diagnosed 4 times in the past 2 years due to a disability application. 2 psychologists, 1 psychiatrist, and 1 LCSW. All came back with essentially the same diagnosis except one psycologist who suggested schizotypal traits.

Did you get an eight page report as well then 8O I couldn't believe how much he picked up on from just talking at the interview!

Yes, very scary reading as I am not good at reading about myself.
It sounds a lot easier for us than it is for people who have to contend with private health insurance and what appears like a bunch of money grabbing charletons elsewhere.

Yes I'm certainly glad I don't have to deal with all of that! at least here in the UK, you get diagnosed because people want to help, not because they want to make a profit out of you 8O

I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist who specializes in teens and children.

I was 13. He talked to me-just to get to know me. He talked to my parents. I made an angry out burst towards the end and stormed out-in my defense he said to me "You can storm out if you want." I sat still and upset with what he said. Then he said something I didn't like-I can't remember what it was-and I threw a tantrum and stormed out.

He told my parents I had aspergers syndrome-they had never heard of it till then and neither had I. And I was mad about that diagnosis. But it got me special attention in school so... but I still was furious that he would diagnose me with it. I rejected it. Till now. He then prescribed me medication (Risperdal) for the anger tantrums.

And you?

My story is almost identical to yours! I was even also 13. Except that I had a really extensive evaluation at a university. I don't think I stormed out. But I was really unaccepting of my diagnosis at first, because I wanted to be "normal" and didn't like having it proven that I wasn't. Over time, I got used to the idea and started to appreciate that at least now there was a name for what I was and I could prove that my behaviors weren't just me acting out on purpose.
