In the past, I made the stress of the world - and the world in general - go away by doing drugs. I don't have that luxury these days so I guess having pillows to punch, and the occasional beer, will have to do the trick.

For the person who said "control yourself" above and 'personal weakness', that sounds a lot like what NTs say to any neurodiverse folk - autistic, bipolar, schizophrenic w/e - all the time. If we could, we would. Most people try as hard as they can. 'Personal weakness' and 'immaturity' is hardcore ableist.

What if somebody said "ghetto" minorities gave all people of color a "bad name" instead of looking at the actual factors causing these issues, that somebody would rightly be called out for racial prejudice and classism. Abuse is real. Somebody being aggressive or triggered by an abuser is something real. 'Personal responsibility' is another word for privilege and guess what a privilege hierarchy exists among autistics too. Not everyone is a 'mild aspie'.

I wonder what it is that flips the switch between outward, "violent" meltdowns and inward ones.

I myself have never hurt another person during a meltdown. I have always just hurt myself, or just become completely non-functional.
