I learned to swim because my mother was determined that I would, since she never did. I took lessons for a looong time and got pretty good at it. I learned all the strokes and was almost good enough to be on the swim team. Unfortunately, I had a mental block about diving since I absolutely refuse to be turned upside down--and for the same reason, couldn't do a flip at the end of the lane to turn around.

I can sort-of ride a bicycle but I didn't learn how until I was 19 and lived briefly in Florida, where everything is flat. I was carless so had to ride a bike to work. When I moved back to Birmingham, which is hilly, I couldn't go downhill because I'd get scared, brake too hard and fall over. Couldn't go uphill because I couldn't pedal, balance and shift gears at the same time.

I can barely swim, but I can ride a bike pretty damned well.

I CAN ride a bike but I'm scared of it since over 5 years ago. In fact I don't know for sure if I can still do it.
Swimming is no problem, in fact I have very slender hands that really help, but I'm not very physically strong so I get tired of it easily.
My handwriting is extremely clunky. Thank the heavens for keyboards.

Can't ride a bike to save my life. I mean I can ride one, it just isn't natural. I stick with a slow beach cruiser. But I can swim. I'm like a dolphin in the water.

I can ride a bike with no problem.

For swimming, i can survive in the water and can swim shorter distances, but not with the "proper" technique. Mainly can do the crawl using only my arms.

That "problem" blew up in my face in high school. The school had a pool meant for HS swimming meets, but that also meant that swimming was a part of the required PE course. The teacher saw i wasn't using the "proper" technique to swim so i was relegated to the shallow end of the pool where all the other students in the class were in the deep end getting more advanced lessons.

Bad enough on the humiliation factor alone, the there was a teachers aide there who obviously had no training nor experience in teaching swimming. All the instruction i received was to kick my legs up and down and i should move using only my legs, and that was enforced by requiring me to hold onto a flotation device with my arms so i couldn't swim with them. The teachers aide was told to have me swim 20 laps across the shallow end each day of class using only my legs with no further help. What happened was i push off the edge and got to the 1/4 lap mark that way and was unable to move any further no matter how much i kicked, so the humiliation grew even worse, and i was not given any useful advice to get me over this. Needless to say, i got a failing grade there.

For writing, i can write rather well if allowed to use block lettering and given sufficient time to do it. I could never do cursive well as it was a futile attempt to copy someone else's pretty writing style, and was always knocked for "poor penmanship", plus if forced to write fast, the quality drops very quickly in either style i used.

DS can neither swim nor ride a bike. He is only 6 but he has been going to swimming lessons for over 2 years with no success. I am pretty sure it has to do with him not liking having his feet off the ground.

I know how to bike and swim, but it took me a very long time. My brother and I started learning to bike at the same time, but whereas he learned it in about a week, it took me about 2 or 3 weeks.

I was intimidated by the thought of swimming at first, and hung out in the kiddie pool until I reached an age where the lifeguards didn't allow me in anymore. It was at that point that I became determined to learn how to swim, and spent an entire summer teaching myself how to do it. I used to be a pretty strong swimmer once I learned, but these days I just dog-paddle around at a snail's pace because I like to savor the feeling of my body being mostly submerged in the water. I think when I was younger, it was more about showing off and proving to others - and myself - that I was just as good a swimmer as anyone, but now that I'm older, it's just a relaxing activity that I prefer to do at a leisurely pace.

Learned to ride a bike fairly easily with some scrapes and bruses, could never to wheelys, jumps or any other trick I tried despritly to learn, all i can do is ride normally and I often have to walk the bike over hills and odd terrain.

Passed a couple of learn to swim classes before failing twice in a row and quitting, I can stay afloat and thats about it.

My handwriting is still garbage.

I am a very un-cordenated person to this day.

I just noticed that there were several replies about having problems with water in your sinuses/nose. I have this exact same problem. I need some sort of nose plug or full face mask otherwise I can't stand being underwater. That's part of the reason I don't swim often :\

Swimming is part of the school curriculum in England at KS2. http://education.gov.uk/popularquestion ... 2/swimming

Cycling isn't part of the school curriculum but a small number of primary schools now have balance bikes for kids to use. In KS2 there is a cycling exam and qualification called Bikeability but it's about road safety and kids have to be able to ride to a reasonably good standard beforehand.

I can't ride a bike I tried when I was younger but I just couldn't do it, swimming yes I can a little bit and I'm not afraid to get my head under water, although some swimming strokes I have trouble with.
