I think "redneck" is somewhat similar, although it tends to have small-town, farm-and-country implications rather than state-housing/tenement hooligan implications. "White trash" might come a little closer, perhaps.
In Australia they'd be "yobbos" and in New Zealand "bogans".

What is a Chav? Are they white trash? Or trailer trash (lives in a Mobile Home)? Another term for a redneck is a Hick. Eminem is more of white trailer trash that thinks he may actually be black "wigger." Honkey is a good one, I had a black guy the other day refer to me as a honkey while I was holding the door open for him.

It's an acronym for Council Housed And Violent. They're the british version of white project trash that think they're black project trash. check out http://www.chavscum.co.uk for more info.

Oddly enough though, they don't appear to listen to gansta rap. they listen to plastic manufactured stars like Brittney Spears and Christina Aguilara, though I think Eminem might be listened to as well.

Some people who might be considered to be celebrity Chavs: Jade Goody; the Beckhams; as for Wayne Rooney... :roll: .

I agree Britney Spears would rate as a Chav in the UK, as would Eminem.

As for the City of Culture & other EU city things - they've been lots of places that you'd never expect. I don't think it really means much.

Norwich was voted most polite city in Europe some years ago; that was the day I was beaten up by a yob for "looking at him in the wrong way"! :(

Perhaps they were right though; after he'd decked me, he apologised and helped me back on my feet, before directing me home :roll:
