That's called an aura.

EDIT: Whoops, I see renaeden beat me to it, hehe.

Although I haven't been to a doctor to diagnose it yet, I do think I have a form of epilepsy called Myoclonus. Myoclonus consists of a certain type of seizures that take their form in small, second-or-two-long jerks. I've read that people can normally have them when they get tired and their body begins to shut itself down, but people with Myoclonus have them more often. Anyways, I also dream about having seizures during my sleep every once in awhile, so I wouldn't doubt that I've been having seizures during my sleep.

Actually the stats are about less than 20% of those with seizures have seizures triggered by flashing lights.

My son has Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, he has Complex Partial Seizures and he has Moderate Autism.

My son Aaron is 8, he sratrted having these seizures in his sleep just before he turned 5, he has 5 or 6 a year. It starts with him wetting the bed and then vomiting and then being unresponsive for a period of time. It makes him very tired and nausiated for a few hours after. The doctor diagnosed it with Benigne Rolandic Epilepsy, He thinks he will grow out of them. I sure hope so. He is also Aspergers. Very High functioning. They can be very scary in the middle of the night for him and for us(his parents).

I had them when I was young and maybe 5 or 6 since I became an adult. When I was a kid I had all sorts tests done which turned up nothing. All the times I remember were accompanied with a visual and aural aura then I lost all muscle tone turning to jelly on the floor. They usually lasted ten to twenty minutes with a nausea that lasted all day after

So an aura is a forewarning of a seizure? I've heard of auras in reference to migraines. I've read the migraines are actually a form of a seizure and also there is some kind of link between the two and strokes also.

Flickering lights have given me bad migraines. I remember riding in the car on a long windy mountainous road and the sunlight flickering as we past one tree after another gave me a horrid migraine that lasted for hours.

I had one maybe 8 years ago but in general yes I did. I used to get very bad migraines almost every week but that too seemed to pass, I am 39 now

I am not a doctor, but I have had epilepsy for over 30 years. This ounds like a complex partial seizure to me. I think you should visit the Epilepsy Foundation of America website at www.EFA.org. Go to the forums. Everyone is always very helpful there. You can ask if someone has that same exact type, you can learn about epilepsy, you can ask who the good epileptologists in your area are.

You can send me a private message if you want more info.

I get them, but no seizures.
Some people who get migraines also experience auras, in the form of seeing flashing lights or patterns or perhaps smelling something odd.

An aura is a simple partial seizure.

It can be a warning that a bigger seizure is coming, or it can just be the seizure.

MishLuvsHer2Boys, I have Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, too. I have since I was a toddler. Or an infant. I can't remember. Mine can't, as yet, bet controlled completely with medication.

You know who else had TLE? Lewis Carroll, Vincent Van Gough, Dostoevsky. Lots of talented people.

DaisyDiana, my daughter has Benign Rolandic Epilepsy, too. I suspect that she has Aspergers. I am debating whether to get a diagnosis. My mom says she'll get stuck in special ed. In December my daughter was 2 years without a generalized seizure! (That's a grand mal.) She's nine and a half now. So, have hope. Most kids with BRE, something like 95%, will not have seizures as adults.

If either of you wants to talk to me some more about epilepsy, or about having a kid with epilepsy, feel free. You can also get a lot of moral support in the parents' forum at www.efa.org.
