Y'know what would be handy? A drug that could temporarily give people autism.

For a week or so.

Thus the punishment would be so. Someone who makes that comment would be forced to live as an autistic for a week. After that, they may be allowed to say it as much as they like. But somehow, I don't think they will anymore.

hmmm...I've actually wished there was such a pill so that I could take it. Not only would I like a better understanding of what my kids' experience, my daughter's mind is AWESOME, and I'd like to try it on for a day. I think her experience of the world--the cognitive aspects--is far superior to mine.

I hope that doesn't sound crass or insensitive. But I wouldn't see it as a punishment, but an opportunity to see the world from a different perspective.

And, no, I wouldn't opt for it to be permanent. I have a hard enough time with my current impairments and I don't think I'd be able to take care of my kids properly (just to circumvent anyone who wants to counter with if I think it would be so great, would I want it to be permanent).

Or the old standby in ethnic studies classes: media. Reading books and watching stuff by and with autistic people. What I don't get is when autistic people themselves make the bootstraps type comments. That really grinds my gears.

What about the autistic people who make those comments?

Because I think both NT and ASD people can fall under the trap of believing that because they were able to overcome something through extra effort, so can others. Plus, they know the good feeling you get when you overcome something that was very difficult and they probably feel they are encouraging someone else to do the same.

Sometimes, I believe that I cannot do something, and I read bootstrap advice telling me that another autistic person did it, and I reconsider whether or not I can do it, and I decide that maybe I can do it, and I try it again, many more times, and I end up figuring out a way to do it, and I would not have done it if I had not read bootstrap advice from another autistic person.
