One trick I learned a long time ago that really works well for me: if I find myself tossing and turning and staring at the alarm clock then the best thing to do is get out of bed and go sit in a chair and read something. Watching TV almost never works for me.

The bizarrw thing is that most of the time I can't get myself to get up in these situations. At most I may venture to the toilet, but switching on the light, taht would mean I have to acknowledge that I can't sleep so it's a hurdle I can't cross.

Its impossilbe for me to go to sleep at night without the television on, my brain likes to think about stuff when it really shouldnt be. Distractions will put you to sleep in no time.

I cannot settle my brain down tonight. No matter how much I try I cannot keep the thoughts from running through my brain one after another. It's keeping me from falling asleep even though I feel tired and desire sleep.

Is there any stradegy that any of you have found that seems to work in helping you get to sleep?

I had that for a long time, tried fighting it, it didn't work. For me the best thing is to just give into it, as I'm falling a sleep I'll notice that its turning into half-jibberish, then hypnogorgic (sp?) hallucination (though I'm usually too close to sleep to really pay much attention to that), and usually I can fall asleep by just letting it go and losing track of it.

For many years now, I have gone to sleep listening to the din of a news/talk radio station. Since you, like me, are in the Appleton, WI area, WBBM (780 AM) out of Chicago (or sometimes even WCBS, 880 AM out of NYC, with a very clear night signal here, for a change of pace) serves the purpose very nicely. :-)

Any music, even the kind that plays in the mind, will keep me awake.

Some nights, though, nothing will work short of completely remaking the bed and I'll end up just having to write that night off and live with it.

It usually takes me about an hour to fall asleep. An hour and a half if I am upset or worrying.

The only thing that I have noticed that keeps me from doing this, is to be on the computer before I go to bed and let my eyes get tired. Of course, I don't really like doing that because I am usually more tired in the morning due to this. If I can't fall asleep and my brain won't shut up even though my body is tired, I find I can only just let my brain wander, and get into bed earlier so that I still get the right amount of sleep. I just account for the hour.

I listen to a book-on-tape. It has to be someone with a pleasant voice though.

that's how i go to sleep..for several years now, i'll keep it on my local news/talk station (WOAI in san antonio) and i have no problems drifting off to sleep..unless coast to coast AM has a very interesting show on, then i'll force myself to stay awake listening to it..especially if art bell is hosting..

I live in dorms which kills the radio reception. I can only get a few stations, only one of which I care to listen too. Besides I need absolute quiet in order for me to get to sleep.

LOL. Art Bell makes for the best insomniac theater.
