I contend that the DSM IV definition of AS is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! Because it's all about what THEY see, it's about observation. It's NOT about how it is to actually experience AS. Any 'scientific' observation can be skewed according to the predisposition and prejudices of the observer (no matter how many letters s/he has after his/her name). Heisenberg showed this conclusively!
Thus, the DSM IV et al are meaningless in the real world. The fact that we all know MANY AS females is a case in point: H Asperger worked ONLY with little boys; little boys are the ones who are noisiest, most obvious - little girls present in quite a different way. But hey, just like almost everything else in 'science', it's heavily skewed towards 'Male-as-definitive' version. (Not that I'm a feminist by any stretch of the imagination - just being realistic here).
THIS is y i have had so much difficulty in understanding Asperger's, and THIS is y i have had so much confusion as to whether i really fit the definition. I tried to understand it from the psychiatrists point of view, bc i THOUGHT that would be the most analytical and most accurate way to explore whether i have Asperger's. But there has been so much conflict over the DSM definition and the way i see things. It didn't make sense in comparison to what i see on these boards.
Creatures are black boxes. They do the SAME with depression, and males! LUCKILY, with people, they COULD ask! They simply DON'T! If you look at the DSM, I think some things could be clearer, but it is right. I AM, or at least appear, like that. Yet you have to ASK! Sometimes, if I am sitting alone, or even in a meeting, I will shake my head. DOes that mean I was showing my agreement or dismissal of what was said? Maybe NOT! Sometimes I am referring to what I am thinking about. You won't know why, unless you ASK! BTW a NO might simply be my rotating my neck to make sure it is fine.(I have a bad back).
