I have this problem sometimes. I will also hear something, and seem to hold what I hear in a buffer, and then I will repeat it to myself and understand it as soon as I do that. I've even done this with Japanese.

I have this, especially at work, when my manager is describing a new task he wants me to do. The individual sentences make sense; but, the information fades. By the end of the conversation I will have lost most of the details from the beginning and by the time I've gotten back to my desk I only have the barest outline of what was said. I always bring a note pad and try to capture the important details; but, afterword my notes don't have all the information I need. I want to remember to bring my smart phone and record the whole thing; but, I usually forget to use it. I don't ask many questions because splitting my attention to formulate a question while I'm listening just makes the information I'm trying to remember fade even faster.

Somehow I usually manage to glean enough information to do the task; but, my anxiety goes through the roof and I become depressesed and exhausted.

I'm thinking of telling them at work that my hearing is starting to go bad as a cover for asking them to repeat things.

 That sounds exactly like me. I walk away from verbal instructions and it's like I never even got any.
