thank you, took 2 hours to write it and completely drained my energy. its been replaying in my head for a few days now.

Exactly the main reason why I find it so hard and draining to write messages on internet forums and the like. I don't understand why many here seem to find it so easy. Would you say this is a characteristic autistic trait, or at least for one of the several autistic sub'types'? (I have my first appointment towards assessing possible diagnosis for me in just some days; this is obviously just a curiosity in that regard, although interesting.)

In more detail, for me it's like either I spend forever trying to formulate a message and it just stays a mess and I end up not posting anything and forgetting that I even tried a second later, or otherwise I tend to write a message which I actually post that I find so well formulated that I may replay the sentences I wrote earlier slowly word for word in my head for hours afterwards like it's the sweetest music-tunes.

In any case it's so draining I rarely bother to start out in the first place.

it really depend on the person, i have trouble with typing in general, using words effectivly and keeping focused on the message so, it all lies under Hand-i-cordination,low Verbal I.Q and ADHD. the first two would be autism related but the last one is ADHD itself. it all depends on why you dont like typing long messages.

True. For me at least though it's probably mostly general social communication issues, focusing on the topic/social context, "perfectionism" (I put it in quotes because it is stupid and meaningless and just leads to uselessness); low verbal IQ? and not last a relatively extreme introversion. In short it's mostly just a pain for me with little pleasure. The actual length of the message isn't an issue though. Most often I have similar difficulties when expected to reply with only a brief informal explanation of a personal nature in a mobile text message. On the other hand I have enjoyed writing lengthy certified Good Articles on English Wikipedia (which isn't even my native language) about fairly obscure topics in the past (when it was my so-called "special interest", I guess).

(Yeah, I'm pretty messed up.)

(Edit: The irony that this very reply is taking me ages to write ;)): I am not diagnosed so this may just be the way I am, but I can relate a lot to what you mention there about it taking so long and being so exhausting to even write a reply on here, or as you say, regarding giving 'only a brief informal explanation of a personal nature in a mobile text message'. I find texting really hard, and feel bad that people may think I'm ignoring them if I don't reply for ages, when in fact I have spent ages trying to decide how to reply, and got very anxious worrying about it. This is why I suspect using forums such as this has a limit in benefiting me, as although I like reading forums and I would like to be able to interact better, if I am using them they take up way too much of my time - most of that time being used trying to formulate a reply on something I want to comment on, which can take hours just for one reply or post. Part of that being 'perfectionism', although I think it is more to do with me obsessing over everything I think about or write, rather than because I am aiming for 'perfect'< I agree that that is meaningless, therefore people calling me a perfectionist does actually annoy me, lol, even though I identify with being one. It's as though a 'perfectionist' is the closest word I have found to describing what I am, so I use that label for myself, but I don't think it is very accurate in describing how I am - it only really describes the surface presentation of my nature, not the reasons behind it.

Anyway, therefore I do much prefer communicating via writing, as verbally I can't seem to think as quick as other people therefore often lose my chance to respond or am too slow deciding how best to respond. However it seems that communication via writing doesn't solve the problem of being so slow, or rather 'taking a long time' - I wonder whether I don't think slower than the average person as such, I just spend too long thinking, I think, and get delayed by tangents and fixating on things in my head. So writing allows me to communicate with people better, but yes it is very exhausting and time consuming.

Well I can tell you from what you write that we have very much the same issues with this. Trying to think of a reply just makes my head flow over with thoughts in all angles and directions on the topic in question so it's difficult to decide on what to include and what to discard. Obsessing, and time-consuming, yes. After a long tiring week at work I can't believe that I spent most of my friday evening just around posting a few messages on this thread and awaiting possible replies. Hours has disappeared like minutes. When I got home from work I was dying to just relax and sleep, but I somehow got fixated on this instead and now I'm wide awake and will probably not be able to sleep until the morning. And along with it comes, as you also describe, feeling bad about possibly not being able to reply back again.

It just became more clear than ever why I seldom do this. Appreciate your reply though.

You think it's draining to write, my energy is draining from reading all these replies. Ah ADHD.

I've been diagnosed, more time than I want to admit to and like you I had trouble in all areas of school but high functioning autism was too unknown at the time.

I think professionals can get it wrong too but it helps to have someone tell you how you seem on the outside. That doesn't have to be a doctor but a friend or family member. I'm pretty damn self-aware these days so I just know that I have it. Anyway, I've been diagnosed so I don't really have to question it. The symptoms just scream out at me.

I'm not really interested in a diagnosis myself, but my mother is pushing that I do it. She thinks that somehow my life will magically get better, although I disagree. After all, I'm 53. .

My advice is do not go ahead with it. A diagnosis will not do you any good if you are not ready to receive it. It is a good thing to have parental support, but at 53 years old this is your decision to make based on what you want. My decision to get a diagnosis happened despite my mothers discouragement because I knew I was out of options and excuses and thus completely ready to accept it.
