From my personal experience, what comes as a result of receiving a diagnosis is initially a better understanding and acceptance of myself, and then support from various agencies to help me to have a better quality of life.

We, the people on the Autistic Spectrum have a choice.
We can either try to "fit in" with the rest of society, or we can be so egocentric that we can't be bothered.
I choose the actor. I observe NT's. I listen to their socializing. I practice it, so in social situations I can just emulate/mimic what is expected.
It isn't natural for me, but it enables me to "fit in".
It is VERY tiring and draining, but at least we can appear like them even though it is an act. Like being on the stage.
They can't see it is emulation, and so we are accepted.

Could you say what kind of agencies helped you? All of my attempts have been met by agencies that treat only children.

What country are you in? That can make a huge difference.

With a diagnosis you can.......

* Apply for a "handicapped" parking permit for your state or country (I think....some U.S. states still are VERY loose with requirements for one, you can go there and get it even if not crippled)
* Apply for Medical Marijuana programs in U.S. states like California, so you can get a permit (Autism/Social Anxiety. Seen enough forum posters say 'lol weed makes me NT' sooooo)
* Get cheaper housing if you are in University Dorm/a "single" room in Uni dorms without annoying roommates.
* Probably get SSI or something or assistance for finding jobs.
* Cheaper or free public transport, depending on the country in question.

Oh, most of these ppl require a diagnosis or letter of recommendation,

Hopefully you can do better than we can in the US. In the US if you are diagnosed after 18 you are pretty much out of luck for help.
