All I can offer are random thoughts.

"Pride" is considered one of the seven deadly sins.

Still, it's not considered "pride" to take "pride" in your work.

I think the sin of "pride" is to uplift yourself to an unbecoming degree just because of something in your life.

If you have money, letting yourself have a high opinion of yourself just because you have money (even if you worked hard to earn it), is being prideful in a bad way.

Just as humility is a balance to pride, you don't have to debase yourself to be humble.

I suppose you could look at it by watching the episode of Big Bang Theory where Howard came back from the ISS and wouldn't shut up about having been in space. Yes, it was a big deal for him, but constantly talking/bragging about it was annoying everyone else.

Should he be proud that he got to go into space? Yes.

Should he rub it into the face of anyone who will listen? No.

You could also watch Bull Durham where the young pitcher had a great throwing arm, but his mentor (Kevin Costner) told him that he had to memorize and repeat the "humble pie" sound bites so that the public would love him. Yes, he owed everything to his fantastic throwing arm and not anyone else, but if he came across that way, his career wouldn't go very far.

I think what's going on is that people use pride to mean two entirely different things.

One is feeling good about something you've accomplished. This is what most people think of as pride.

The other meaning of pride is feeling good about who you are. It's probably more accurate to call it 'good self-esteem', but a lot of people call it pride.
