Yes, this terrifies me. I don't want confused and uninformed parents killing off their children just because they are "not normal." And who defines what normal is? Some panel in Washington, D.C. or at Harvard?

Looks like it is starting in Australia ...

The internet was ablaze last week with the news that health authorities in Western Australia (WA) have given approval for IVF clinics to ‘screen’ embryos to reduce the chances of a couple having a child with autism.

I don't hate curebies but I hate being condescended to, being told my priorities are wrong, being told what I should want, being told I should be willing to be a different person, and so on. So I react badly in such conversations.

I'm against the idea of a cure. I'm not broken, sick or diseased. I'm also not worried about people knowing I'm on the spectrum. I'm not so vain that I feel that NT is the only way to be and I'm not ashamed of my diagnosis. I also fear for the autistic children of the future who's parents will be pushing the cure on them, whether they want it or not, if a cure does come into existence. I enjoy my special interests, unique appearance and unique and wonderful way of looking at the world. I've also learned a lot by being autistic. I've learned not to hurt others in the sadistic, sarcastic and emotionally abusive way that I've been hurt. I also like how I can spend hours alone if I need to and not feel bored or lonely. I'd rather be a little slow and goofy than be normal and abrasive. I apologize if I've offended anyone.

although its the parents choice to abort as its their body, in own view its a tragedy when people decide to abort a downs child,people with downs are incredible people to know and live with and are so undervalued in society.

I am one who agrees that a cure would be nearly impossible. I think it's not only a matter of it being part of neurology, but I think that as Aspies, we see a side of society that non-Aspies often refuse to acknowledge in themselves or others. They could just call it a neurology change. Just like transgender people get sex changes.

There is still a lot they don't understand about how peoples brains work....the physical body seems to be a bit simpler, hence a sex change doesn't quite compare to a 'neurology' change. Brain surgery to change neurology, would likely be very dangerous, the term lobotomy still comes to mind. Also no one would have a sex change forced on them...not sure that would be the case with autism.

No, it won't be a "cure". Nobody here was talking about ending pregnancies. They were talking about curing children and adults with autism, and that's why it was said "nobody here has that in mind when speaking of a cure". That's not what this thread is about.

It's about CURING, not eliminating.

You're taking it a whole 'nother direction.

What Western Australia is doing is letting parents - who have a family member with autism - do embryonic screening to pick out a female child. The reasoning is that the odds of having an autistic female is much less, therefore, this should lower the odds of the child being autistic.

We may see autistic females become more prevalent than autistic males if they are successful at reducing autism.

I don't feel that autism should be reduced. I feel that it should be celebrated. I also feel that people of both genders should be brought into this world.
