According to psychology LFA and HFA are determined by intellectual capability and not social aptitude. High functioning doesn't mean you can function well in society but rather that your thought processes function well enough to achieve a certain result. Whether you are socially adept, depends on traits, social disabilities and comorbidities.

I see this post has been resurrected from the crypt!

I think moderate functioning nowadays accommodates people who have IQ> 70 but who have language difficulty/speech delay/communication hurdles.

labels are pretty meaningless...

It was just taking a year off from being a topic, but it is back and rearing to go now!

I think they're being revived because of the "Similar Topics" section at the bottom of the page not having a sensible date filter on it. I have requested a change in the wrong planet meta forum.

I like that the post that revived it says pretty much the same thing as a few on the first page.

I always assumed that there must be folks officially classified as MFA (middle functioning autistics) sandwiched between the LFA's and the HFA's. Every thing in life comes in three's(low, middle, and high). But now that you mention it- you rarely hear the term "MFA" used.

Is "middle functioning autistic" (or "moderate functioning autistic") an offical category, or not?

Since Aspies have hijacked the HFA label the former HFAs now consider themselves MFAs
