Why are patronizing and condescending attitudes so hated?

I hate being talked down to because it implies that the person has made some sort of assumption about me, about what I know. It's like they are taking control of the conversation and blocking me from being able to communicate.

Nobody likes to be talked down to...even if they know they are idiots.

It's also why con men are so effective with smart people. They appeal to their intellect....make them believe they are too smart to be conned.
