I twirl gift-wrapping ribbon into neat little spirals. I also do this with rubber bands, and paper if I don't have ribbon or rubber bands. The stim started with paper when I was 14, in my Geography class for some reason. I also went through a phase where I'd tear the interior tab of an aluminum can into little shards. (The tab that goes inside when you open the can, not the one that you maneuver with your fingers to open the drink). I systematically made the same creases every time, and folded it back and forth until I could make a tear. I got to where I could make smaller and smaller pieces, and people would get frustrated with me because the pieces would end up all over their apartment or house. One time I had a roommate get mad at me because her boyfriend stepped on an aluminum shard in our carpet.

I pace around outside while listening to my music. It isn't a "normal walk" because I'll randomly break into a run when I get exciting thoughts. I don't go far. I just pace around near my home until I get all the excessive energy out. Oddly enough, I also started this stim when I was 14. I think my stims when I was younger involved my mouth. I used to take a drinking straw and fold it into zigzags with my teeth (don't ask how).

I twirl my hair into curls, twiddle pencils around my fingers (like Boris did in Goldeneye), tap, scratch (as if I had an imaginary itch), put my hands in my pockets, various other things.

I usually tap my feet to the rythm of whatever music I'm listening to, bounce my leg, run my right hand index finger over my right eyebrow when nervous, hold my breath, twist my ring around my finger, snap the rubberbands on my arms, and some others. Nothing tooo crazy, but I rock every once in a while. And I handflap when I get freaked out when I can't practice my piano (7:00 every night). When I audition for stuff I handflap too until I get to the piano and sit down and place my hands on the keys.

Hi, all.

I'm trying to learn more about stims. I get that its commonly a physical thing: drumming, finger biting, hand flapping and other things that might be called "fidgeting." I've got a few of those, and had more when I was younger. Now though, I think that I've converted most of mine to internal stims.

Along the lines of the poster who said her partner was reading her lips as she mouthed what she was thinking. That's funny, and one of the things I've always done is spell words in my head as I think them. Sometimes I find myself doing this under my breath. Also, I do have mental conversations, which sometimes come out as whispers.

Anyone else have more of these largely internal stims they'd like to share?

Also, I'd like to know more about the purpose/origin of stims. I know this is probably a repeat/beginner question, but I need some guidance here. Anywhere else on the forum or off to which you can direct me so I can learn more?

Many thanks, WPers.

DD

I crack only the middle joint of my fingers. When I was a child I worried that my fingers seemed to bend inwards, so I thought I had to correct them  I crack my little and ring finger away from the thumb, medium and index finger toward the thumb. The thumb didn't need correction. Initially I think it was always one finger at a time, from smaller fingers to bigger ones and from left hand to right, now I am more relaxed about it.

I hate an unsmooth fingernail's edge, and when I found I have one I usually rub it on my teeth if I can't find a scissor, but I don't chew fingernails, I chew around the root of them, biting off slivers of skin if needed, never to the point of bleeding though. Curiously, I started doing it when a dog bit my thumb as a child, maybe I liked it somehow :?

Recently I like to rub my palms together, especially the pads under the second metacarpal bone.

I do chew my pens, although not to the point of damage. I can't conceive to intentionally damage my belongings, although I may do it by sloppiness.

I used to rub underneath my earlobes to the point of bleeding but that seems to have stopped now. Now I tend to pick the edge of my thumbs with my index finger, which can lead to lots of blood and pain but I don't even realise I'm doing it until the pain kicks in. I also drum like crazy on tables and bounce my leg up and down. I hum a lot too, again without realising until I've been doing it for ages. I sometimes pull out my eye lashes and eye brows and if I'm bored I rub and scratch my scalp, which means very greasy hair!

My boyfriend doesn't have AS (according to him, but he does have a lot of symptoms) but he hand flaps when he gets excited. He also chews up pens to nothing and doodles a lot.

I rock from side-to-side a lot when I'm feeling upset or overwhelmed - or I rub my head (I'm a bald-by-choice female!) or my forehead between my eyes.

I rub the tops of my thighs sometimes...helps me concentrate.

Leg bouncing, and a lot of talking to myself...I think out loud especially when I'm working.

I like to smell between the pages of all my new books... I find it very comforting!! !

My main for of stimming, is this weird twitching of my fingers which, I often do either during times of serenity as well as when I'm nervous therefore, I find it most helpful as it's not bothering anyone atleast to my knowledge that is.
