Do parents understand?
On a more general note, is anyone capable of truly understanding any other human being ? Our experiences and mindset are very different, and words and even nonverbal NT communication seem really clumsy tools to carry it. AS/NT communication is even more difficult because of our different life experiences but I think the basic problem is more general. Seriously, does it really looks like even NT are understanding each other ? They will tell you so, but in the same time they constantly fight, hurt and abuse each other, sometimes on purpose and sometimes not. They keep making completely groundless hypotheses about what other persons are thinking or wanting, then they act upon those hypotheses like they were absolute truths, then they are proven wrong, and then... they go on doing the exact same things. Sometimes I think that really, nobody understand each other, but that idea is just too scary for most NT so they go on doing as if they did.
As for parents... no, they won't understand you, but what is important is more whether or not they listen to you.
If they listen to you and care for you, and if you are able to express your needs (that is difficult for me), they can do much and try to fit those needs even if they don't understand them. And then you can be grateful, and even if they don't understand there is love and reciprocity and that is good.
If they don't listen to you, you can't do much except trying to explain in a different way that they will listen, but sometimes it can really feels like a waste of time. Their behaviour may change with time but it depends more on their own self-questioning abilities than on anything you can do.
