Don't feel bad. I did too.

I have a verbal IQ in the 90th percentile.

But, my visual is in the 40th.

Despite these weirdly contrasting numbers, which I don't want to know the overall for, I know I can still do a lot of things, even the stuff they say I'm bad at.

Oddly enough, I got all of the idioms right.

Some people are clearly intelligent but don't test well.

Others take an IQ test a couple of times (with different questions each time) and get much better results.

this issue sounds like its caused by deeper issues that have nothing directly to do with inteligence.
judging from this and older posts it sounds like have got a lot of issues with sense of self/identity and have got a dysfunctional view of self worth.

it might help having CBT as its distressing to live life feeling like dying because do not meet some concept that society obsesses over.

am intelectualy disabled and dont feel any limits, its how we see ourselves that matters not what functioning we have.

I've read several of your posts, and I can tell that you are indeed an intelligent person. I too, used to place much of my self-worth on my intelligence because I was a "failure" at everything else; I couldn't hold a conversation to save my life, said many unintentionally rude things, had no friends, and didn't practice proper hygiene. It took me a while to realize that I was not happy living with that mindset. It's dangerous to place a huge portion of your self-esteem in one area, because when that area starts to falter for whatever reason, you lose all confidence in yourself. Besides, a concept as vast as intelligence can't be simplified into a three (or two) digit number. That's just ridiculous.

I've scored pretty high on IQ tests and it's never me gotten anything, I'm not any happier or content with my life because of it. I don't think of myself as that smart despite what my IQ says, if you can't apply it what does it even mean?

You're alive, so you're succeeding at life.

If people considered you to be smart before you took that test, then they still do. Only your perception of yourself has changed based on the result of some test.

Why would you base your value or worthiness to live & be happy on the outcome of an IQ test? Seems silly. Don't do that.

I have the same problem: I have an excellent eye for proportions and can hand-draw pictures in front of me with a high degree of accuracy, but at the same time, my visuospatial deficits put me at risk while driving and navigating because I can't judge speed and distance accurately, so I have a hard time knowing when it is and isn't safe to pull out, change lanes, etc. and I can't read a map to save my life, and literally got lost one street over from my house.

I think my slight spatial deficits are caused by my brain fog. I think I had better spatial skills when I was a kid. I'm not the best at following maps and directions, but I almost never get lost. I even knew where all the stores in an American mall were. Hopefully my spatial skills will become average or above average when my brain fog clears.

I was tested around 4th grade because the teachers at my new school were concerned because I did not fit in or join the others in class well. They did not tell me what they found, but I started seeing a counselor a lot in fifth grade and they put me in a sixth grade math class. I went once a week to a lady who taught me how to look at her face while we spoke. She taught me to look at her forehead, or right eyebrow... all I remember is that I got very self conscious about those things.... But they tested me a lot and were surprised by the results.

The dogma in those days was that IQ doesn't really change. But they tested me on one day at 113 and another at 135 and another at 129.

I had a huge battery of tests again in 8th grade and those records show 135. I have tested around 130 fairly consistently since, but different versions of the IQ test produce different results and I will not do as well when I am having lots of sensory sensitivity as when that is under control.

So don't take it to heart. You are very smart. I have read the words of people on WP with IQs of 70 who have posted some of the most intelligent things I have read. Your life is what you make of it. Others can be huge influences, but you have the ability to choose where you put your attention and that can take you a long way toward whatever you want from life. Put more of your focus on what you want to do, discover and experience and less on what you are. Your biology is not your destiny.

This is why I could never take an I.Q test, I feel like I would end up limiting/beating up myself as a result of the test outcome, also I have major testing anxiety and I could barely make it through tests in highschool without zoning out into a trance because of the stress it put on me, I doubt the test would even be an accurate reflection of my true intelligence.

I'm curious to what kind of test it was. Because if it was just some psychologists asking a bunch of verbal questions, I wouldn't take it so seriously. Many psychologists are nothing more than educated morons.

It was a psychologist asking me verbal questions and giving me visual puzzles. She never said it was an IQ test or mentioned exact scores, but she did say the scores were average.

I think that people place to much weight in IQ tests. There are types of intelligences that are difficult to measure by asking a series of multiple chose questions. I think people with AS have specific strengths and abilities that don't really show up very often in IQ tests. My IQ is about average but I think I have certain mental strengths. I think that people with AS tend to develop special strengths because of how their mind works and because of their interests. Someone could be the greatest soccer player in the world, and still suck at football. I tend to be good at imagining complex things visually...but I also have trouble with doing more simple visual tasks like rotating objects to the left or right in my mind. Things like sculpting don't make it onto the IQ test but also take a lot of brain power and creativity.

So since people tell you you are smart and have good spacial skills, I would ignore the numbers and go with what the people say. :)
