I sometimes buy video games when I know I am not going to be playing it or will play it and then hardly ever play it after I am done. I have done the same with collectors things like buying Lite Brite refill pictures when I knew I wouldn't be using them or buying Knex knowing I won't be playing them long or buying adult baby clothes knowing I will never wear it after getting it in the mail. I will put it on and wear it and then take it off and have it sit in my closet or storage bin. I do the same with toys too. Buy them and then not play with them. I have gotten better at not buying so much junk because I know I will just give it away later like I have before. I bought a doll from another AB that wets when you give it water and it was something from my childhood I wanted but mom said no to. So I got it and played with it and made it wet its diaper and then it just sat in my son's room (then guest room) for a year before I gave it to my nephew's half sister during nesting. The doll was also my pretend baby after I had a miscarriage and I even took it with me in public but left it in my backpack. Then when I got over it, the doll just sat in the bedroom in a paper sack for about a year. I have also gotten happy meal toys only knowing I wouldn't be playing with it and that is my inner child coming out that makes me want to buy these things but I have gotten better at controlling it because I don't want to fill my home up with junk. Not that video games are for kids only.

What prompted me to start this thread was that yesterday Amazon had a sale on a growler (think you store beer in). I can't even drink beer and I was thinking, HEY neat I want that! I'm nuts!

Anyway, I'm pretty good at catching myself before I buy, but I still wonder why would I even consider buying anything so useless to me. The last thing I remember buying that I didn't need was one of those big carts that people carry stuff in. I have no idea why since I'm always on my bike anyway, but I bought it. Then after tripping over it for a few months I just gave it to the lady who does my laundry. (Ding dong!)

yeah. Usually it's when I do need something so I'll buy one of the first things I see and it is completely inadequate (work shoes from Walmart 1/2 size too big or small come to mind).

And on the other side, like on vacation, etc, I get SO pulled in by all the knick-knacks and it's just ridiculous.

Amygdala hijack.

Advertising slips into the Limbic System unnoticed controlling behavior.
After an action, come the awareness and ....
"Oh, yeah. I've always wanted one of these"

Ads created addicts as the industry experimented on people.

Food, drugs, alcohol, porn, cigarettes,....

The USA is being pestered into collapse.
Businesses believed the research that consumer spending increases with frustration.

Have you seen any bots that seemed to taunt?

I have been buying Nook books and free ones knowing full well I may not even read them because I know how I am. I am only getting them because they sound so interesting and then I might just forget about them on my Nook and books I am reading on there I didn't even finish like Raising Cubby or the other 500 page long book about autism that was free. I am reading a book on it right now and I decided I won't start another book until I finish the ones I am reading. I know it's better if I just buy a book as I read but then the deal on that book will be gone and the price will be back up again to its original Nook price.

No, not really. I'd sometimes buy things and only use them for a short while/season, and then never again.. but I've never really bought things I would NEVER use. Although I have sometimes bought materials for some project idea or another and then never gotten around to the project.. so maybe that counts?

Financial impulsivity & abuse of credit are common w/ ADHD and I think Asperger's, too. I certainly used to be a lot more free spending in the past, but am now extremely frugal and way more of a saver than a spender at allll. I basically only buy what I Need. The only significant "wants," I've paid for have been gifts for others, and my new eye glasses that cost more than my car lol. I did Need new glasses, but I could have bought cheaper ones. I'm ok with these ones, though. They look great and I'll have them for years.
