Brushing hasn't been a regular habit of mine for years. I hated it as a kid, and looking back now, a lot of it had to do with sensory issues. I still have a hard time trying to brush now, so I've just sort of accepted that I'm going to need dentures at a young age.

If anyone has tips on how to desensitize my gag reflex so that I can get back into the habit of brushing, I'd greatly appreciate it. I should probably also see a dental hygienist some time since I very likely have gingivitis, if not full-blown periodontitis.

I have this problem too. I'm turning 30 and my teeth are in pretty bad shape. I've always hated brushing my teeth, and since I moved out of my parents house, I didn't have anyone reminding me or pretty much forcing me to brush.....

You need to look after your gums as well. Some people can have perfectly good teeth but they might have chronic gum disease.

You have to make sure you get all the food from out of your gums, otherwise it'll turn to s**t in your mouth, give you bad breath and what's more it'll rot your gums away and your perfectly good teeth will just fall out.

Then you'll remember to brush.

Do you use cayenne pepper on your gums? It does wonders for them if you can tolerate the burn. :D

^^No, my gums are ok, but that's quite interesting. I've never heard of that before. I'll bear it in mind for future reference.^^

Bad teeth->Gum disease->jaw rotting->partial jaw removal

Happened to someone I know who was a stranger to a tube of toothpaste/toothbrush.
Not me - I go to dentist every 6 months and brush/floss daily.

This is interesting. How do you do that, though? Do you eat the actual peppers? Or do you put ground up cayenne pepper ( the kind you get on glasses ) on the tooth brush? Here in Norway, I can only get the ground up variant. At least in the area were I live.

I try to brush my teeth and use mouthwash morning and evening, and I also floss on evenings. My favorite part is the freshness after having used mouthwash. I like the strong minty kind. Feels like it's purging my mouth and it leaves a good taste too! Unfortunately, I can't find the one I have been using anymore. =/

You can put some ground cayenne on your toothbrush and gently brush the gums. You can also use liquid cayenne on your toothbrush as well. Dr. Christopher's has the liquid. He also makes an eyewash with cayenne pepper in it. I have never tried that though. Liquid is always much more potent than powder. I sometimes drink it diluted about half a stopper full in water and it feels like my mouth is on fire but it is so good for you that I tolerate it. But if your gums are receding, brushing them with cayenne will reverse it. This is really important if your gums are receding a lot because receding gums can lead to very serious dental issues. Cayenne is also very good for blood circulation, that is why I take it, and it is great for killing intestinal parasites.

Yeah. That is a huge motivator for me. I LOVE the feel of smooth teeth. Anytime they are not totally smooth I can't take it. It really bothers me to no end. I brush my teeth at least twice a day. once in the morning and once before bed and I floss every night. Sometimes I brush and floss after lunch too. I just can't stand the feel of dirty teeth.

I only brush once a day, but yes, how could anyone go a WEEK and not go crazy from the sensation of a dirty mouth...never mind the smell.

I always joke with people, if you can smell your own bad breath, it's BAD.

Don't forget to brush your teeth, even if you have to write yourself reminder notes and stick them to your front door and your bathroom mirror. Dental work is super duper expensive and painful.

The diet I am talking about is easier than you think. I recommend reading "The Paleo Solution" by Robb Wolf for more details.

Yes, I am familiar with Paleo. It's a very good program.

Can you not set a reminder on your phone? I do that to remind me to take my meds.

I understand being forgetful but it fascinates me that some people with AS lack basic hygiene. I can't leave the house without having a shower and brushing my teeth, otherwise I feel really dirty. I'd feel complete shame if someone told me I smelt bad.

Well, I just brushed my teeth and showered again. I put on the same clothes, though.

No-one, not even my therapist or psychiatrist, has mentioned it.

Yeah! Good job about brushing your teeth and showering. Really. I mean that sincerely. I know how hard those things are for you and I am proud of you for doing it. No worries about the clothes though. It's always best to put on clean undies but other than that it's not a huge deal to wear something you have worn before unless it's really dirty of course. But that's great that your got your teeth and showering done.

Thanks. :)

I have a somewhat different sensory issue regarding dirty teeth. I don't want the food stuck on the teeth (be it crackers or something) to come into contact with toothpaste. For some reason I don't really like that.
