No, I don't do any singing at all now except at home or in the shower. I actually never liked public performance even though I stuck with it for years and years. I really pushed myself because I knew that if I wanted to get anywhere with my music, that's what you have to do.

Until one day I realized how much I hated it. Not the singing part -- just everything else that goes along with doing it publicly. I hated always being out late at night, especially when I had work the next morning. I hated being in front of an audience; I felt awkward and self conscious and I always kept my eyes closed while I sang and played. I forced myself to keep going for years simply because I knew that's what you're supposed to do to pursue a career in it -- but I really hated most of what it took. I wanted to get my music out there but I wished I didn't have to play for people. I think that was a huge way of my aspie self affecting me -- all I wanted to do was stay behind closed doors recording my stuff, or curled up in front of my TV in my pajamas, instead of out in some noisy bar at midnight playing for people whose eyes felt like daggers. I honestly hated "playing out."

So I stopped and just sang in the car or shower ever since.

I've recently read Nick Drake's biography and I'm convinced he was on the spectrum. 8O

It's a shame you hated it. I was the opposite, I loved every bit of it. I do well with public performances and even public speaking, I hear that many Aspie performers are actually like that. They do really well whenever they are performing but not when they are not. I did get really nervous if I had to solo though. But I think a lot of people do even if they are not on the Spectrum. That's normal.

It's just as wonderful to sing for yourself at home though. I love singing in the shower. Don't know what it is about the shower but I always seem to be in good voice there even without a proper warmup. Even my husband sounds good in the shower!

Eggheadjr. Maybe people would not throw things at you if you performed while in the shower! :p

I love singing (a lot), and it does have therapeutic value for me. I'm able to cheer myself up with the right song.

I'm one of those "can't sing" people but I love to sing alone with oldies on-line while I play a game. Problem is those vocal pop-ups that are so bad and so often that I've given up.

Does anybody know how to get rid of those pop-ups?

They did that to Pavarotti, when he was 5yo (he said on TV).

i would love to sing, but so many have told me not to that i don't. even my wife, who is a singer. i'm told that i'm "tone deaf", but i can hear music just fine, just can't make it, i guess; so i say that i'm "tone mute".

I love to sing. I love music, and singing is voice-music. My mom says I my first attempts to talk were by singing.

Music is my equivalent of talking about emotions.

My mom always used to sing to me before I went to sleep, to calm me down, to comfort me when I was sad and in the aftermath of meltdowns. Sometimes, she'd sing me songs to tell me things when words were not working. Now I use listening to music and singing to calm and comfort myself. (I sing when I'm happy, too, but don't think happy-singing counts as therapeutic.)

I absolutely love singing but I am the worst person really to have that talent/ability because I am so 'shy/unconfident'. In reality I am not shy and am extremely confident but singing is done in front of people. Strangers........eeek.

I will go on the karaoke and sing my heart out and people will compliment me but I am like a wooden figure while singing. No movement, just singing :) I used to sing in a band but I had keyboards and guitars there 'to hide behind' so I didn't need to move at all anyway.

But yes.I love singing.

Yeah, I give singing a go in private quite a bit but I'm godawful at it. I once serenaded a lass who fancied me and she told me never to sing again. She was clearly right though on the notes I can't hit and the way I can't seem to use my diaphragm. I wouldn't mind having a strong, precise croon.

I'm a bad singer and I know it, so I don't even try. :P I really like music, though.

I sing all the time. Choir and Show Choir and theatre were the closest thing I had to a social identity in High School. I'm led to believe that I used to have a really good voice. Over the last several years, I have become at how monotone I sound when I sing. I've started experimenting with different vocal styles even though some of them come out sounding ridiculous. Recently learning about Asperger's, I'm thinking to myself now...a monotone Aspie...how very curious.

I try to sing, but most of the time I have part of the song Mr. Sandman stuck in my head. It's not really the whole song it is just the melody just before the singing starts. It's like a broken record, over and over again. There's a lot of things in my life that are that way.

Singing reduces anxiety for me. I think it's because of the controlled breathing.
