I don't think I have a "phobia" to words, but I definitely have a strong "aversion" to a few words----so strongly that they cause a physical reaction----like I'm gonna throw-up, or have a seizure, or that I want to shake / slap the person who utters them. I would say, maybe, that I'm not afraid of the word, but afraid of what it might do to me.

Most of my life I have disliked the word Love. I feel it is said out of context to much. For instance, people saying I love chocolate or I love music. I do not understand how one word could be used in this way. I could only associate it with people who are closest to me, and even then I can not say it to people. I say it to my dog all the time. When someone says it to me I'm uncomfortable. I also dislike the word ignorance. For some reason this word makes me angry.

i know this is an old Conversation, but...

i used to not be able to say the word "Beautiful"
Also, i couldn't say "how are you"

i would feel embarrassed, anxious, physically it felt awkward, almost gave me shivers, and i just couldn't do it. like it was for grown ups only. or it was too emotive. too intense and "open"

anyway, i always thought it was just one of my many odd quirks.
now as a 57 year old!! !! ! im discovering i may have alway had ADD and been slightly on the spectrum and had no idea.
i also think i have some Synesthesia symptoms among other things. i visualize time/calendars etc backwards and in a very specific visual way in my mind very differently from almost everybody i ask.

Autism

I have yet to met someone that was able to you understand it with my help let alone a cursory Google search which just outlines the stereotypical archetype which well , I would run the other way if wikipedia is where I learned about it

What might a word "do to" you?

And...can you give examples of such words?

I've always had a phobia of the word "Asperger's", especially if it's being said out loud (it's OK if I write it or if it appears on an autism site). Even if I come across the word unexpectedly in a book or something, I suddenly feel alarmed for some reason.

When I was a kid I HATED anyone saying that word. I hate the way British people pronounce it like
Asp-her-jers. I still hate people mentioning it now, although I don't overreact if someone says it. I just jump a little inside.

I sense I had mild phobias/aversions to specific words, and phrases (no specific examples recalled); usually this was apparent when I heard/read words associated with negative experiences.

Once upon a time, I sort of did.

"Blood."

I'm not that afraid of actual blood. But if I try to read something that uses "zer b-vord"* lots of times, like a New Scientist article about haematology, my skin starts crawling and I have to stop reading.

*as Otto the Vampire would call it....
