You could start by just looking up definitions of "memetics" and "uncanny valley".
The theories involved are not just mine.
I have observed similar processes to those Joe90 describes, so I have no reason to doubt her account, or her suspicions of either intent or callous disregard. Both are logically explainable within human psychology.
Psychology also provides explanation of why people will often blame the victim.
