i remember back in the stoned age [70s] when I was a junior high school student, I flapped my hands in front of this teacher who ran up to me and grabbed my hands and shouted STOP THAT!

That's horrifying and startling.

Same here, but I just grew out of it.

But yes, OP. I do find myself rocking quite a bit...

I rock when I'm anxious, to calm myself down. I do it in public too, don't care if people stare.

That's still a pretty extreme reaction to a harmless behavior.

Rocking is one of my biggest stims. I try to do it slowly when out in public so no one can notice it and comment on it.

I do it primarily when under stress or excited about something. I didn't really start until about two years ago; my stims have changed and evolved as I've gotten older. This one is more stereotypically autistic, but it makes me feel safe somehow. I have an autistic friend who does it a lot, even while standing. He can be quite intense with it.

I do these things, but what makes them stims? Rocking feels centering and calming, but shaking the hand/hands, swaying and bouncing against things when standing feels like letting out steam. Is that stimming too?

I feel like stimming is both letting out steam and feels centering and calming. I think that different stims do different things. For me, rocking is both calming and letting out steam. So, it varies for different people. But, whatever it is to you is correct as well.

Thanks. I just wondered what makes certain movements stims.
