Im only self-diagnosed, but ill happily stick AS on benefit forms. If you feel the need to claim benefits, its for the symptoms not the label, which is (or should be) irrelevant.

If i was a student, then id use the label to my advantage without hesitation.

I agree entirely.

If you can cure the depression ( or other co-morbid), then why bother spending any effort in asking why?
If it makes you feel better by giving out the label of Aspergers, then this is as good as any pill.
But it does devalue the people who actually have it and could not care less about getting a diagnosis.

Really do not quite comprehend what you are saying here... If one is depressed, and one believes that this is the result of asperger related socialising issues, it makes sense to get a diagnosis, in my opinion. I do not quite see how seeking a diagnosis for Aspergers devalues those who have it and dont care about getting a diagnosis. Your post makes no sense.

You can believe that X is Y; it doesnt make it so.
X may not be so happy being compared to Y.
Does this make it more clear?

Also, if you are going to say my post 'makes no sense', please could you explain why. What do you not make no sense of ?

Another example:
eg. If you cure an ailment, why should you be bothered about where it was contracted?
If you do need a reason else the ailment is not cured, then fine call it (say) AS.
Your ailment is cured ( you have your reason - AS), a placebo.
Now, others may actually have AS. I think they have been de-valued.
Do you see?

Hope this makes it more clear ( and when i say 'you'; i am talking hypothetically: i do not mean you personally, how could i?)

edit: you do not get depressed because of aspergers and social issues; you get depressed because of the social issues. There are many depressed people who do not have aspergers: it is not the cause and never will be; it is merely a classification of behavioural patterns.]
