I was under the impression that very few people actually cared about fame and fortune. That people wanting fame and fortune is a myth.

I thought it was a myth that let people say "I'm not materialistic because I'm content with 40K a year and I don't need a million dollars".

I used to think like that. My material desires are very low. I have very high subjective desires. Some might be impossible such as conversing with demons. I figured I cared more about the immaterial than the material. That made me think I was extremely unmaterialistic.

Then I realized that I am actually very materialistic. I would have a very hard time living without Magic the Gathering. I couldn't live on nothing but bread because I crave the unnecessary taste and pleasure that comes with certain kinds of foods. I'm very materialistic I'm just content with material things that are accessible.

Is it true that people really care about fame and fortune? I thought it was just a myth that people cared about that stuff.

I recall the actor Alan Alda once saying, "You don't have to be rich and famous to be happy. You only have to be rich."

I suppose success is in the eye of beholder. But, I would have no desire whatsoever for fame. I'm sure it would stress me out. But I wouldn't mind being a reclusive multi-millionaire.

The financial security would certainly be nice. I value my privacy too much to want there to be any reason for people to pry into my life, business, or property... such as fame.

I definitely care about success, although success is in the eye of the beholder.

Fame doesn't necessarily result in financial security. It certainly helps attain wealth. But there are plenty of famous people who've had to declare bankruptcy. Some famous people even became homeless after losing their fortunes. Although there's more non-famous homeless people than famous homeless people, lol.

I know a few pretty famous people and based on what I see, the pros seem to greatly outweigh the cons. What I mean is that having photographers take pictures of you when you run errands or being approached in public for a picture/autograph once in a while seems like a small price to pay when consider all the benefits that fame has (like being recognized and admired for your work. Or all the free stuff you get from companies in the hope that you'll be photographed driving their 100,000 dollar cars or wearing their $8,000 shoes).

On the other hand, I think that Justin Beiber level fame would be annoying. I think there's a difference between his level and the level of most pop stars/ movie stars / professional athletes.

I don't think most actors get approached nearly as much as you would expect, and for the most part, the people talking to you are just fans of your work who want to get an autograph or tell you how much they appreciate your work. And it doesn't happen everywhere. For instance, I was at the airport 2 weeks ago and Lisa Kudrow was waiting to board the plane along with me and everyone else taking that flight. No one walked up and talked to her. In fact, she asked if they had started boarding first class yet and one person replied "no" and that was pretty much the only interaction anyone had with her for the 30 minutes before the plane boarded (I was waiting next to her so I would have noticed).

I thought I was famous one time.

It turned out to be a psychotic episode.

Weird times!
