Well spoken. I hope that the next generation
learn that coping skills, not their med's is the
answer. Too bad we live in a pill popping society.

Ghosthunter....

Then from,
From Jman

With all due respect, I resent that comment. i
have bipolar disorder which is a biochemical
illness, which like autism/AS can cause alot of
disabilityIn fact I think the bipolar disorder causes
me greater impairment, than the ASD.Anyways,
I need to take those pills,or I will not be able to
function as efficiently, if at all. I could also die
because my judgement becomes impaired when
my mood gets out of control. If this was the old
days, the combination of my autism and bipolar
disorder, i probably would have been in an insane
asylum. So I don't want to hear anything about me
being weak, or having poor coping skils. if anything
my coping skills are pretty strong considering what i;ve
been through.

Jman, I will appologize for offending you, I was
just stating my opinion based on how I see our
society is going and it's easy fix direction for every
problem(Pills). I was in no way addressing issues
like Bi-Polar, ect.... . I was addressing the fact
that NT's don't know how to deal with neurological
issues of autism, and how disguising this singular
issue's symptoms with pills for it's symptoms that
may impair the coping skills evolution.

I am not unsympathetic to chemically-based disorders
and knew a few people who REALLY need bi-polar
meds, Manic-Depressive meds. Thes people
illustrate chemical-based disorders, as I said
earlier. Since I don't really know who has comorbid
attachments and who doesn't, I can only say
that if it is autism, and no chemical-based issue
then disguising the symptoms in a a NT world
disrupts the singular issued(autism) coping skills
development.

So I will appologize for seeming disrespectful, I do
not have a crystal ball and cannot see into everyone
and their co-morbid statuses.

Appologetically Yours,
Ghosthunter

I think there are some symptoms that often accompany AS/HFA which, if bad enough, can often be helped by medication. Especially with aggressive behavior or OCD symptoms or attention problems because of the high comorbidity rate of autism and ADHD.

But I also think the executive dysfunction in autistic disorders which affects mostly the white matter of the brain cannot be aided by medications because medications only help neurochemicals problems. And for the most part, the executive dysfunction does not involve neurchemical abnormalities. It is with the brain material, itself, and not the peptides produced by the hypothalamus (or the chemical production center of the brain).

By the by, here's some interesting facts I got off of the Center for Disease Control's homepage about the "Mercury poisoning causes Autism" fad. The CfDC was the organization that put out the statistic of 1 out of 166 kids have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

CfDC

-MMR is a combination vaccine that protects children from measles, mumps, and rubella (also known as German measles). The first dose of the vaccine is usually given to children 12 to 15 months old. The second dose is usually given between 4 and 6 years of age.

-In 1998, a study of autistic children raised the question of a connection between MMR vaccine and autism.

-The 1998 study has a number of limitations. For example, the study was very small, involving only 12 children. This is too few cases to make any generalizations about the causes of autism. In addition, the researchers suggested that MMR vaccination caused bowel problems in the children, which then led to autism. However, in some of the children studied, symptoms of autism appeared before symptoms of bowel disease.

-In 2004, 10 of the 13 authors of the 1998 study retracted the study's interpretation. The authors stated that the data were not able to establish a causal link between MMR vaccine and autism.

-Other larger studies have found no relationship between MMR vaccine and autism. For example, researchers in the UK studied the records of 498 children with autism born between 1979 and 1998. They found:

-The percentage of children with autism who received MMR vaccine was the same as the percentage of unaffected children in the region who received MMR vaccine

-There was no difference in the age of diagnosis of autism in vaccinated and unvaccinated children

-The onset of "regressive" symptoms of autism did not occur within 2, 4, or 6 months of receiving the MMR vaccine.

-Groups of experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, agree that MMR vaccine is not responsible for recent increases in the number of children with autism. In 2004, a report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded that there is no association between autism and MMR vaccine or vaccines that contain thimerosal as a preservative.

-There is no published scientific evidence showing that there is any benefit to separating the combination MMR vaccine into three individual shots.
