Is there such thing as health insurance for pets?

I don't think there is--but you probably have more knowledge in this than I do.

Yes, there is. You can usually find out about it from vets offices. There used to be a kind that we had info on at the vet I worked for. It's mainly good for pets who end up with major health problems or something chronic. You don't do it like regular insurance. You pay the vet and send in the bills and they reimburse you. They may have something new out now that vets take and so you only pay part of it, but that's not how it used to be. It's a good idea if you have a very expensive dog or a dog breed that is prone to certain chronic medical problems. It's a good alternative for people who would have problem putting down a dog with a chronic problem and who also would have problems paying for the treatment.

Thanks.

Because vet bills could be expensive.

Yep, they can be. And unlike doctors and hospitals they are not obligated to treat to save a life. If a person gets hit by a car or is having a heart attack or is very sick we can go to the emergency room and they will treat us whether or not we have money or insurance. A vet won't usually treat a dog or cat that is sick if you don't have the money to pay them. They will usually put down a pet for you without charging if it's in serious pain, but they won't treat one if you don't have the money. There are also no pet ambulances, which would be helpful to people who live a long way away from the vet, have a big dog, and live on a busy street where he could get hit by a car. Especially if they don't always have transportation. Like if one of my big dogs got out and ran into the street and got hit by a car and didn't immediately die, I couldn't do anything except call the cops. Depending on how busy they are that day and whether it's an a**hole one or not, I might get a ride to the vet with my dog. If not, they would at least shoot them for me to put them out of their misery.

My two cats are very social--one likes to crawl into my lap--the other loves to have his tummy rubbed!

Mine are a**holes. One is the one my daughter got from a friend and she used to pee everywhere. Thats when she started being an outside cat. She comes in some now and she does use the litter box but she's inside and outside. The other one is a declawed one that I got left when my mother died. The cat only liked my mother, and she hates the dogs and other cat but she learned to deal with it.

The dogs don't dislike the cats. They try to play with them but the cats won't play. If a dog gets near they blow up and explode on them. They will even sit up higher on something and wait for a dog to go by and reach down and hit him, hard. This causes the dog to bark and chase the cat who goes behind furniture.

Getting cats was never my idea and when these are gone I'm hoping we don't get any more.

One of my cats is autistic. He was diagnosed when he was 2 years old. He doesn't like loud noises like when I play the drums and doesn't like to be touched and he doesn't even bother to look at me when i'm speaking to him.

Who diagnosed a cat with autism and exactly how did they go about doing that? Was this a vet or some kind of "animal therapist" or something and did they try to make you pay for that?

I've never heard of animals being diagnosed with autism. At the vets office we only treated physical problems of pets. Behavioral issues were handled either with meds to sedate them or by training.

Additionally dogs have diffrent neurology from humans as well as a diffrent social structure and socail learning so odds of a dog having autism are very low, and finding out if a dog really does have an autism like condition would have to encompass knowledge of and evaluation of his develop, ect from birth on, improper socialization can cause a dog to have a verity of anxieties and caninine communication issues

Yeah, but canine autism is well recorded, even in natural observation (it has been seen in the wild with wolves.) You might be able to look up some documentation concerning it, but it probably isn't worth the time to find an animal psychologist... because they tend to only work in a strictly research setting.

I don't think pet health insurance covers ASD testing, especially for adult pets. So, if you adopt an adult pet from a shelter, know ahead of time any such testing will need to be done out-of-pocket.

In my town there actually is a pet ambulance that goes to a very expensive emergency vet.

Why in hell would you even need to know that your dog is autistic? How will it effect him or you?

I honestly think pet shrinks and dog autism are way overboard. I have three dogs that I love very very much, but no way would I worry about whether or not one of them had autism. Dogs have their own personality and I wouldn't think you could tell an autistic dog from an NT dog.

What is the point of getting a dog tested for autism? Whats the point of taking one to a psychologist either?

That actually would be a great idea if you lived in a town big enough and affluent enough to pay for that. Imagine how much money you could make with that! It wouldn't work around here because nobody would call an ambulance for their pet down here. I remember in Birmingham though, there were people who went very far overboard with their pets. They didn't just take care of their health problems when they arose and made sure they got their shots and heartworm pills, they obsessed over their pets. If you lived in a big city like that then you will have plenty of pet obsessed people who would pay out the rear end for a pet ambulance, and regular people could also call it when their dog gets hit by a car.

I wish I lived in a big city and had the startup cash for that because I'd sure start that business! I have an idea for another animal based business as well. I might one day do that one though.
