But each individual knows themselves too well to be defined by societal categories.

I don't care, say, if somebody associates my "high-functioning" autism with somebody who is "disordered" in some way. I know, in myself, that I'm much more "different" than "disordered."

I don't like these "hatchtag" things.

I don't really identify with the highfunctioningmeans tag messages.
They make sense in theory, but I don't get them on a feeling level.

Some days I can be high functioning and some days not so much, just depends on how overloaded I am or other issues that crop up. Mikie

I think two hashtags are needed:

#LowFunctioningMeans people question your personhood

#HighFunctioningMeans people questioning the validity of your difficulties

#LowFunctioningMeans people expecting very little from you and treating you like an infant your whole life.

#HighFunctioningMeans people expecting you to completely ovecome, or at the very least, mask your problems or else you're not "trying hard enough".

#LowFunctioningMeans people think your disability is a prison

#HighFunctioningMeans people think your disability is an excuse

#LowFunctioningMeans you're not a person in the eyes of others

#HighFunctioningMeans your not a good enough person in the eyes of others

I can do this all day.

There are rare moments that I wish there was a "like button" and this is one of them. Thanks for sharing this.

WP spends so much time trying not to segregate low functioning from high functioning that some of the comments are honestly a bit shocking. :|
