There are times when even a layman could tell if someone is using a script. If a person makes use of lots of clichéd idioms, that's a "red flag," so to speak.

There are times, when I can't come up with "original thoughts," that I resort to clichéd idioms--I'm making use of a template--a script--in these instances.

And all my life I've just been following the patterns.

"Fake it 'till you make it" sound familiar? I just have to take different paths/ use different strategies to get to the same places. Duh. :skull:

Indeed....there are times when one truly has to "wing it."

Ad-libbing is a great skill to have in life.

How do people script eggsacly?
Aren't NTs also scripting when they say socially conventional things?

I think most NTs are able to just "go with the flow" when it comes to conversation and social situations and are not worried about what they are going to say/do before they get there. Perhaps they memorized certain conventions when they were very young, but now just "take it as it comes."

Scripting? I personally think about everything I am going to say and/ or do and sometimes even practice it beforehand. I do this for "everyday situations", whereas an NT might only do this for very serious and/or unusual situations. When I was in high school, I visualized/rehearsed/even memorized entire conversations including possible variations before talking with some people. It turned out to be very useful, as it helped me learn how to predict how someone might react to something I say.

I do this less often now, but I will still write down everything I want to say if I do something like call the doctor/make an appointment, etc. There are too many "unknowns" especially when talking on the phone that could get me off-track, so writing everything down helps.

For me, when a situation leaves the expected "script", I freeze and I don't have the ability to come up with something impromptu to cover for "forgetting my lines."
