I can bake from recipes, cook " basic but nice" meals from recipes and cook basic everyday meals without recipes -- but I don't enjoy it. I hate to cook; to me it's a chore not a pleasure.

One reason may be because one of my sensory issues happens to be about the feeling of foodstuffs on my fingers. Preparation of food bothers me for the sensory impact in the tactile sense.

Rather hit and miss. Can cook a pizza in the oven but not say a pasta ready meal.

The feel of uncooked chicken really bothers me.

Yep, that cold, fleshy feeling.

Another of mine is oily, greasy and/or fatty things, handling those and getting it on my fingers. Prolonged contact with greasy items during cooking bothers me to distraction.

I'm scared of picking up a pot full of boiling water, but I was recently able to cook pasta in a pot when I got a big pasta ladle with holes so I could take all the pasta out when it was finished and not move the pot or pour the water out until it had cooled. Before that, I had only used a rice cooker to cook things that would absorb all the water so I wouldn't have to pick it up and pour the water out.

I don't mind handing raw chicken too much, but raw beef kind of sickens me. However since I started buying grass fed beef, it doesn't bother me as much. I just dump it out of the package though and cook it scrambled. I hate having to form burger patties with my hands, yuck, and same with sausage.

Yes, I can cook most of the things that I eat. Hot beef sandwiches covered with brown mushroom gravy (not from a packet), real mashed potatoes (laced with sour cream) and buttered corn on the cob on the side is one of my Sunday staples. I also occasionally make a smoked prime rib dinner during the summer when planned guests drop by.

I cook professionally, it's one of my favorite things to do.

Yes. I can now that my thyroid-function has been restored to normal.

Anyway, I was just wondering if there are any aspies/autistics who are capable of cooking. I mean over the stove, not the actual microwave that is.

Did I answer your ponderence sufficiently ?

I cook for myself and I did for my family in the past, its not too hard really. Don't get how some people can't do it at all.

Interesting. Apart from Dox, no one really enjoys cooking or does it noticeably well? I'd have thought more autistic peoples would rally for it, given the prevalence of weirdness around food with texture and pickiness and what have you. I LOVE to cook, its also one of my favourite things to do, and one of my special interests. Specifically Japanese cuisine and kaiseki-ryōri. I can happily spend all day preparing a multi-course kaiseki meal, and have been told I'm a fantastic cook by several different groups I've cooked for. I actually love shopping if shopping for ingredients, and even love thinking about and planning a meal, teas to accompany it, what flavours and tastes complement, what ingredients traditionally go with what, taking into account cooking times and coordinating slow cooked components with fast cooking ones, any specialised tools needed, and even enjoy the presentation and manner of eating.
The only downside is cooking for people who then eat with their mouths open ...

I'd go along with this, although I've never cooked Japanese food but often eat it. I have a special interest in herbs, many of which I grow in the garden. If you have particular culinary likes and dislikes or a special diet, then you really do need to be able to cook, otherwise you're at the mercy of other people or ready meals. And cooking is very absorbing, even therapeutic.

And yes, I know what you mean about the way some people eat! It puts me off my food ...

yes, unfortunately lol

I panic about it, but as long as i stay in the kitchen from start to finish and write notes during and time things properly, i'm very good at it. It's things that take time where there's nothing else to do while waiting for something to cook is when i fail... like frozen chips! lol easily forgotten about.
