I agree it's best to think before posting or putting personal details in your profile, but I'm not worried about anything I've ever written here. I've got nothing to hide except my bank details and PIN numbers. Biggest risk to my well-being from WP is that its data might get hacked and sold to the targeted marketing community. And even then, they'd have a hard time putting an ad under my nose. Governments, police, blackmailers, thieves, employers, advertisers and scammers would be wasting their time.

I don't really feel I have shared anything that's going to prove to be harmful...also most people in general probably don't even know this site exists, let alone spend enough time on it to zone in on someone just to find out 'who they are'.

Nonetheless I am careful about personal information and certainly don't give out my address, financial info, social security number or any of that....hell on sites you can save your debit/credit info to make future purposes I never do or just use paypal. But like I don't care if someone was to discover I smoke cannabis, or have cats, or find out my views on political or social issues, or that I have autism or other mental disorders, ect via this site. That is stuff anyone who interacts with me for long enough is bound to find out online or IRL. I am more comfortable only discussing some things in members only but even there I use some caution.

How so? I don't think people do need to share in order to grow. Explain please.

Well if everyone kept to themselves and never shared ideas, concepts or information I could see how it could cause mental stagnation.

Even if they read it here, it's hardly strong enough evidence for a raid. You could be making it up for all they know.

I share what I want to share, and I keep some things private. I've learned that some things are better kept private in early 2007, the hard way.

I don't share a lot yet because this forum is big and I'm new. I share a lot of stuff on other forums though. probably so much so that a determined person might identify me. but what is the point of trying to hide all the time, it takes all the fun out of everything..

I'm not terribly worried, people share infinitely more on social media. I don't think anyone cares enough to dig thru 7000 posts of mine over the period of 7+ years to piece together a portrait of myself that still wouldn't tell you any real sensitive info.

Heh.

Were you expecting name, address, and Social Security number?

Not necessary. People know only what you post.

If a member has posted under the same nickname on other websites, and there are enough details that match from each, then enough data points can be recorded to interpolate country, state/province, and city.

From there, it may be easy to determine the name of an individual from what they've bragged about. Women's basketball? Swimming? Student council president? Year of graduation? Just find the one woman that fits all of the details, and you are almost certain to determine her identity.

Never use the same nickname on more than one website. Alter or exaggerate your accomplishments, and change the dates and places (including the time and place of your birth). Sprinkle liberally with false leads. Use more than one IP address to log in from.

:D

I think you're paranoid. Who's going to go to that much effort just to find some random forum poster?

Psychopaths with grudges. You might have pissed them off or something. Might disagree with what you said. Might just be an easy target. All kinds of motives. Some might just be bored. There are really f*****g messed up people out there.

Fnord is right though. Also I think plenty of people may do that. It's naive to think otherwise.

I happen to doubt it very much that "many" people do that--but one still has to be wary, nevertheless.

People have lives to live....they don't have time for this stupid crap.

I remember a mod telling me to be careful about posting. Seems a while back someone stalked someone else from here.

To be honest, showing up at my door would be the biggest mistake a stalker would ever make lol. But apparently it happened to somebody here.
