it's actually a manga. and there are 8 books in the series. Sadly the last two, especially the 8th book, isn't properly finished, because the author died before they could be completed. however, it was also turned into a Japanese Drama series. Hikari To Tomo Ni. and can be found on Youtube. both the book and the series were done really well. and by the 5th book, they don't just cover autism, but other disabilities as well.

I highly recommend it...and believe it should be a staple in EVERY residence and business place.

I'm surprised that this series isn't more widely known. It taught me a lot about what parents of autistic children go through, especially in Japan. My mom is Korean and they hold similar attitudes toward the disabled. It's quite sad and they still have a ways to go toward acceptance, but I was able to get a better understanding of why my mom doesn't want to consider me having autism.

Too Loud, Too Bright, Too Fast, Too Tight is a nice self-help book about hypersensitivity.

My current favorite one is probably Ron Suskind's "Life, Animated." It's about an autistic boy, Owen, and how his family harnessed his all - encompassing interest in Disney movies in order to make him feel safe enough to engage with others. They called it "affinity therapy" and many parents with autistic children/family members who have read the book are warming to this approach to autism therapy. :) It's not about changing who a child is or forcing him to act "non-autistic" (although there is some discussion in the memoir of how Owen was trained out of stimming, just to trigger warn for that) but rather helping them navigate a world dominated by NTs in a way that feels safe and enjoyable for them.

I would have loved it if my parents had done "affinity therapy" with me rather than just automatically writing off anything I was interested in as "childish," "age - innapropriate," "immature," etc.
