Hello darkness my old friend
I've had mixed results with anti-depressants.
Fluoxetine and sertraline both almost killed me.
During my first six month intake of citalopram, I did find the medication beneficial. But this was administered in conjunction with a vigorous workout routine, a super-healthy diet and I attended a therapeutic community three days a week, too. However, my second six month intake of citalopram wasn't anywhere near as effective. It's worth noting that I wasn't working out or eating healthily and the therapeutic community had concluded, too.
Maybe there's direct correlation between a healthy lifestyle (both socially and nutritionally) and a happy state of mind? I found working out to be fun at first, but it's difficult to sustain unless you are really passionate about health and fitness. My slow metabolism didn't exactly assist me in my efforts to be fit either.
And the medication I am currently taking - mirtazapine - has been slightly useful. But I have seen my weight rise to its highest in over four years. When I first was prescribed the medication, I was 146lbs. I am now 157lbs and it's not too difficult to envisage it increasing even more over the holidays.
I am somewhat of an oddity as I obsess over both my body mass and calorie consumption, yet I am asexual.

Agreed on the exercise routine. I have kettlebells at home and used to have a nice work-out regimen with them. I just have to become obsessed with them again to get it going. I also took my dogs on long walks but lately I don't even want to leave the house.
You are so right about the meds being used in conjunction with exercise, diet, and therapy. When I have those three things going I have accomplished amazing things. We moved last year and all my routines and safety nets went out the door.
I'll read up on mirtazapine.

Aside from the distinct possibility that you will gain weight from taking mirtazapine (which isn't a great concern for many people), I would say it has the least adverse effects of all the SSRIs I have taken. Tiredness and an increase appetite are the most common of those reported. In fact, I believe it's prescribed to help those who have been diagnosed with anorexia and narcolepsy.

Try to get these going again, maybe start by forcing yourself to get out of the house and take the dog for a walk. You know it makes sense.
I also avoid the prescription drugs due to side effects.

I tried afew different antidepressants but they didn't work that well. Lexapro(was the one I tried 1st & kept going back to after trying others & I was taking the max dose & a half), Prozac, Paxil, Pristiq, Remeron(which made me just sleep & eat), & Anafranil(which did help my OCD but made me very shaky). I think I may of tried another but I cant remember.
After being off of em for years; I started taking Trazodone for a minor depression that was made worse by not sleeping well. I do sleep better & I'm not depressed. I take 100mg of it.
I also take 16mg Buspar for Generalized Anxiety & panic attacks 2x a day, Neurontin for OCD 400mg 3x a day(both those meds help alot), & .75mg of Haldol 2x a day for a possible delusional disorder & so I don't get angry quite as easily.
I tried Lithium(which made me feel kind of drained), Abilify(which made me shaky & caused me to stutter & slur), Geodon(which had similar side effects as Abilify but worse & caused me to have some ticks & twitches), Seroquel(which made me tired), Zyprexa & Risperdal(one made me shaky & the other made me sick to my stomach)
