I'm guilty of that especially if I have been to the individual store before. I'll write a list (and why people look at me like I'm grocery shopping naked because I'm carrying a paper list in one hand, I don't know, but they do) starting at one end of the store and proceeding to the other, which is what I do, so I don't backtrack or zigzag all over the place.
There was also some weird theory that people circle the grocery store the same direction their country drives - believe what you will.
I usually make an individual trip depending on what form of nomadicism I'm operating under at the time. If temporarily settled such as a share house, boarding house or flat, I'll make a list of the ingredients of recipes I'm going to make usually within the next three days or so and just buy what I need. If in the wild I'm more specific, operating under food weight thresholds, perishability, security of packaging, fresh Vs preparation and what can be cooked in fire pits or camp stoves, etc.
if I'm with other people, usually family, we might run other errands and just put groceries in whoever's car, but if alone I seem to do groceries individually to errands.
I also shoot for shopping at night, when there is less heat, light, people, and especially for me at the moment, noise.

The grocery stores where I am are all set up different. I go in an order that has me going through the freezer aisle last so that frozen things do not thaw. Depending on the store, that may require clockwise or counterclockwise motion. It has nothing to do with how I drive, though how I pass people in the aisle may be related to driving.

Makes good sense. I do the same if I'm buying frozen stuff, which isn't often, just making sure I start at the other end of the store and end up at the freezer. I do a lot of driving, and noticed that when I was overseas a few years ago - I was constantly running into people walking on the "wrong" side of the path. :)

I have been using a grocery delivery service, so my trips are supplemental. I think it's easier for me after work, because I'm already acclimated to being out. My work requires little social interaction, so it might be different if it did.

I go grocery shopping about once per week, and when we really need something.

I'm known in my supermarket as the Wolfman.

I can't do it anymore due to physical weakness and inability to drive, but I'm grateful our local grocery store does deliveries. I'd recommend that option to people who find it too overwhelming (as I did back when I used to try!)

Generally, I do my grocery shopping on the same day each week. While I occasionally do a short errand before going to the grocery store, I generally make a special trip just to get groceries.

What's that about, kraftiekortie?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I usually buy groceries on the way home from work, and sometimes I do other shopping in between. If I time it right I get there mid-afternoon long before the rush hour traffic hits, and it's not too bad. But of course if I get there after 5 pm, it's horrible.

The stores I shop at are about 15-20 miles away. And on my days off if I'm not going out for any other reason then I usually just don't want to leave the house. It also seems like a waste of gas if I'm not going out for anything else, when I can stop on the way home from work without going out of my way.

I have to shop at two different chains because neither one carries all the things I need. If I do both in one trip, I can only buy cold stuff at the last one. And I don't really do well with stocking up on a lot of groceries at once. It's better for me to make frequent stops, 2-3 days a week on the way home from work and alternate different stores.

Some days though I just feel too overloaded to deal with it. So I've been thinking about making a special trip on the weekend. From the replies it sounds like others have an easier time that way.

I howl like a wolf, and meow like a cat, when I walk down the aisles.

When I was in junior high school, I used to carry a big stick and pretend to spear the food items.

I could use a spear to reach the stuff on the top shelves. Not sure whether that is any better than climbing on the shelves though.

I hate grocery shopping. I do it bachelor style. Now this may sound strange, but my wife is still not:
a) really able or wanting to make western meals
b) really prefers bitter style veggies
c) My eating has dropped so much it's almost impossible to cook for me

So, I tend to make one of those meals I can refrigerate and eat for a few days on end, sammiches, things like that. Drives my wife crazy. But even though I've minimized my need to get foods (and the wifey is always on the lookout for something she can recognize) I hate going into the store.

The people are difficult enough with all the noises and the lights really get to me in grocery stores for some reason. My eyes glaze over when I see all those labels and stuff. Really hard to focus on the individual things as my mind is trying to put together the patterns into an image. Sort of a Pareidolia thing going on there. So between the outside stimulus and the visual stimulus, it's a real pain. (Speaking of that...when I was young, I never saw the Man in the Moon. I always saw a rabbit. Turns out I wasn't the only one. Was very relieved when I found that out. I thought I was nuts and would not tell anyone.)

And the stores in Brooklyn are really jammed up tight and I really hate to pass by people in the aisles. I actually try to go around, down through an adjacent aisle and back up the aisle I was in just so I don't have to pass people. Can't be helped most times though. But, try to go on off times so I can do that.

Thankfully, my partner does most of the grocery shopping.
I don't mind going to the small corner store to pick up a few things we run out of, even if it's a bit more expensive there.

However, when I'm on holidays my partner tells me it's my job to get the groceries, since I 'have all day'.
I find it's not too bad as long as I have a list of exactly what I need to get in the order I need to get it and I go at a time when it's not crowded - opening time or just before closing time.

If the usual brand we buy is sold out, I can experience what I call a 'sticky' - I stand there, stuck to the spot, because I find it really hard to make a decision on a substitute.
Then some little old lady will give me a nudge with her trolley or something and I'll probably move on without buying that item at all.

I also like to avoid certain days.
Such as pension day.
Those little old ladies can be vicious.

I'm definitely one for 'special trip, grab what I need, get outta there'.
