I strongly suspect my (now deceased) uncle on my mother's side had Asperger's, or something on the spectrum. He fits the criteria so well - trouble socialising and no real concept or what was and wasn't socially acceptable, obsessions - mainly cars, machines and electronics, echolalia and verbal tics, cavalier attitude to personal hygene... He also had epilepsy, and had trouble with drink and mental illness as he got older, so goodness knows how it all fit together.

My little sister and a cousin have definite diagnoses of Kanner's autism. There are a lot of family members who at least show Aspie traits, including a couple of famous ancestors who seem (from their writings, and those of their contemporaries) to fit the profile nicely.

This is all very interesting, as I've often wondered if it was happenstance that other people in my family are on the spectrum.

Deja Q my grandmother is in the same category :)

I really related to her and now she doesn't even know my name most of the time.

My cousin has severe autism, he had to be rehomed, he can't speak, control his bowel, has no interaction at all.

I believe my mother is on the spectrum, probably aspergers.

I'd be inclined to say that my Dad is AS, we are very similar people. He seems to have got a better hang of the 'people' side of things though, he's a Headteacher and forever sourrounded by people, and he does alright.

My father and oldest brother are AS, I am AS and my 6 year old son is AS. It runs in families. In mine anyway.

There's a lot of agreement at this point that autism can be "familial" which indicates an unidentified genetic link. Both of my sons are diagnosed as autistic. It was my reading about autism that made me realize that my confusing and horriffic youth and young adulthood was the result of AS.

My grandmother probably had it and my uncle too and one of my cousin's might have it also on my mother's side of the family.

My uncle has aspergers and my father displays a lot of autistic tendancies but seems to function as a normal person. It definitely seems to run on my father's side.

My parents think that my sister might have AS. She always says things that upset people even though she doesn't realize it, and she hasn't kept any of the friends she's made. Even though she's 26, she acts like someone my age (a whole decade younger!). I wish she and I could be friends, but we don't like each other. :?
